``I imagine (the boys) eventually would have succumbed to the fumes and faded into a coma,'' Deputy Larry Mohr said. ``You could have brain damage even if you were revived.''

The unrelated boys, whose identities were not released, were nearly unconscious by the time deputies and Los Angeles County firefighters arrived at the scene, authorities said.

``He was unable to climb out because it was too steep and the insides were slippery,'' Mohr said.

Deputies Kenneth Valentini, Shane Quartararo and Michael Velek then formed a human chain, crawling into the pipe in single file, grabbing one another's ankles.

With another deputy offering assistance outside the pipe, Sonnemann and one of the boys were rescued, according to Mohr.

An unidentified Los Angeles County firefighter, using a separate rope, was lowered into the pipe and rescued the other two boys, Mohr said.

The deputies were taken to area hospitals for precautionary tests and later released, authorities said.
