Mesquite and Ocotillo tied with 455 points, the second-most points in the elementary division. They missed the top spot by only five points.

``I'm proud of them, that they went into the competition with the correct spirit, to have fun, do their best and not worry about winning,'' said Ocotillo coach Derek Treichelt. ``The nice thing about it is, we tied with another school from Palmdale - Mesquite - for second place. It kind of makes me feel good about Palmdale schools. When it came down to it, out of 36 schools, Mesquite and Ocotillo were ahead of 33 others.''

Sacred Heart's team, led by first-year coaches Theresa Stell and Judy Harbison, competed against 71 other schools at Loyola Marymount University.

The competition involved English, literature, science, math, current events, social studies and fine arts.

Sacred Heart will go on to compete in the state championship in May.

``This is the third time we've brought home the overall first-place trophy,'' said Schuster.
