The death of a farm worker who ate wild mushrooms, the second such poisoning case in a week, led to urgent warnings Friday by officials who implored the public to stop gathering the fungi Fungi (fŭn`jī), kingdom of heterotrophic single-celled, multinucleated, or multicellular organisms, including yeasts, molds, and mushrooms. The organisms live as parasites, symbionts, or saprobes (see saprophyte). .

"Unless you are an expert yourself, or have an expert assisting you, don't eat wild mushrooms," said Wade Whitfield, president of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Mushroom Council in Sacramento.

He said Northern California's recent stretch of rainy and warm weather created ideal conditions for mushrooms.

The latest poisoning victim was Arturo Leyba-Sanchez, 43, who died Tuesday at Petaluma Valley Hospital, a day after he was admitted with vomiting vomiting, ejection of food and other matter from the stomach through the mouth, often preceded by nausea.  - is blamed for poisoning four members of the Chang family in Orinda earlier this week.

The death cap, which stops cell division, can take up to three days before rendering symptoms.
