The endorsement came at a meeting of policy chiefs of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP LDP - Linux Documentation Project ), the New Komeito party and the New Conservative Party. Among the projects to be scrapped is a land reclamation scheme at Lake Nakaumi in Shimane Prefecture, western Japan, for which the farm ministry is responsible. Earlier in the day, an LDP panel okayed the discontinuation of 211 public works projects by the Construction Ministry, the Transport Ministry and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries
But the policy chiefs of the three parties agreed to leave a decision on one project -- an expansion of Fukui airport -- pending at the insistence of Shizuka Kamei, chairman of the LDP's Policy Research Council. In August, the coalition urged the government to scrap 233 public works by three ministries based on four criteria for selecting projects for review, targeting mainly those projects either started or on the drawing board that have not progressed smoothly for a long period of time. The Construction Ministry and the farm ministry proposed stopping an additional 46 projects based on their own criteria. The policy chiefs of the ruling coalition decided Tuesday to discontinue 45 of the 46 projects. The discontinuation of the 255 projects will save 2.5 trillion yen in government spending, the officials said. |
