The unit handled 92 cases last year, up from 69 in 1998, officials said. Public requests for assistance jumped from 4,240 to 5,713 during the same period. Those include calls from the general public seeking information about the unit and the types of cases it handles.

In a letter to the board, district attorney officials wrote, ``It has become increasingly evident this staffing has been inadequate to meet the investigative and prosecution needs in this area.''

, officials have used investigators from other units to fill in with priority cases, including enforcing court orders to locate and apprehend noncustodial parents and to recover children - work that occasionally takes investigators out of state.

``The district attorney has placed a high priority to have the children returned to the parent ordered by the court,'' Gilliam said. ``It a highly emotional situation.''

The new position is expected to cost $118,000 a year including salary, benefits, a car and supplies, all of which will be reimbursed by the state.
