29th American March for Life. (News in Brief: United States).

Washington -- Tens of thousands of pro-life supporters braved the bitterly cold winds of the National Mall National Mall: see National Parks and Monuments (table). in Washington D.C., on January 22, to mark the 30th anniversary of the infamous 1973 Roe v Wade decision which legalized abortion in the U.S.

President George W. Bush, who was attending an event in Missouri, addressed the crowd by telephone. He affirmed his support for life and promised to sign any bill presented to him which would ban partial-birth abortion. As he spoke, a bell tolled 30 times and a small white coffin was placed on stage, representing the victims of each year gone by since the decision.

On the evening before the March, a prayer vigil was held at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Chief celebrant at the Mass was Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua of Philadelphia, who stated "We promise we will not stop until every child in the womb has the legally protected right to be born. Four other cardinals, 36 bishops and archbishops, and over 300 priests were also in attendance.

The Canadian contingent at the March included 40 people from Campaign Life Coalition, Toronto. Other Canadian contributions were less glorious. For example, our "national newspaper" the Globe & Mail, in its report featured a photo of a few pro-abortion supporters, rather than one of the 200,000 pro-lifers!
