29-YEAR CLU VETERAN DIES; JONATHAN E. BOE, DEAN OF COLLEGE OF ARTS AND LETTERS, WAS 55.

A memorial service will be held on campus Friday for a California Lutheran University Mission statement
The University's mission statement is as follows:

"California Lutheran University is a diverse, scholarly community dedicated to excellence in the liberal arts and professional studies.
 dean and longtime history professor who died earlier this week following complications of chemotherapy, college officials said.

Jonathan E. Boe, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, died Monday at the University of California, Los Angeles UCLA comprises the College of Letters and Science (the primary undergraduate college), seven professional schools, and five professional Health Science schools. Private liberal arts college in Northfield, Minn., founded in 1866. It offers a variety of undergraduate majors. Small classes and opportunities to participate in faculty research projects attract a select student body, most from out of state.
 in Northfield, Minn., Boe earned his masters degree in history at Stanford University Stanford University, at Stanford, Calif.; coeducational; chartered 1885, opened 1891 as Leland Stanford Junior Univ. (still the legal name). The original campus was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. David Starr Jordan was its first president.  in 1968. He joined the faculty of CLU in 1970, and, nine years later, he completed his doctorate in history at Stanford.

During his time at CLU, Boe authored and co-authored a number of grants to fund academic programs, such as the Science Outreach and Irvine Scholars program.

He also published several books about history and higher education, including two volumes of ``The American Journey: United States History through Diaries and Letters.''

In addition to his teaching duties, Boe served as associate dean for Academic Affairs before being appointed as associate vice president for Academic Affairs. In 1997, he was named dean of the college of arts and sciences.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, and his mother, Myrtle Evers Boe, of Waupaca, Wis.

Memorial donations can be made to the Jonathan E. Boe Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o CLU Development Office, 60 West Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360. The memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, at CLU's Samuelson Chapel.
