 chemical industrial projects will start operations before the year' s end. Of the 29 projects, 11 are infrastructure facilities. The other 18 are designed to upgrade the technology of existing operations.

The new projects are expected to add a production capacity of 1 .2 million tons of chemical ores, 1.55 million tons of fertilizers, 220 000 tons of synthetic materials, 40 000 tons of organic materials, and 200 000 sets of tyres.

 this year. Of the investment in chemical industrial fixed assets, US$783 million will be used in 11 projects that will be completed this year, and five projects whose construction will continue next year.

Meanwhile, US$204 million will be put in 67 large and medium-sized projects that will break ground this year, including 20 infrastructure facilities and 47 technology upgrading items.

The total chemical industry output will have 5 percent growth to reach US$17.5 billion. Growth in the second half of the year will be faster, and the yearly 8 percent growth target will be achieved.

In 1997, 29 infrastructure and technology upgrading projects started operations.
