25th annual dry-stone walling competition.THE ancient craft of dry-stone walling is in danger of being lost forever, the Snowdonia Society has claimed. It says too few youngsters are interested in learning walling techniques despite increasing demand for trained craftsmen and women. The society is now trying to raise awareness of a time-honoured skill which has helped define Snowdonia's beautiful landscape. On Saturday the society stages its 25th annual dry-stone walling competition at Dyffryn Mymbyr Dyffryn Mymbyr is a valley in Snowdonia, North Wales, approximately 5 miles in length, and leading up from Capel Curig to the Pen-y-Gwryd hotel. The river Nantygwryd, originally called Y Mymbyr , Capel Curig Capel Curig (Welsh: Curig's chapel) is a village in Conwy county borough, in North Wales. It lies in the heart of Snowdonia, on the River Llugwy. It is at the junction of the A5 road from Bangor and Bethesda to Betws-y-Coed with the A4086 from Caernarfon, Llanberis, . The public is being encouraged to watch wallers compete in professional, semi-professional and amateur categories. Experts in other rural skills such as hedge-laying will also be available to discuss the value of stock boundaries. Details of relevant courses will be available. The National Trust will lead a walk around Dyffryn Mymbyr from midday. A society spokesman said: "Our aim is to bring together as many related skills and practices as possible in one event - the common link being the crafts and the benefit they have for agriculture, the environment, our landscape and the economy too. "This will help show that loss of the skills is likely to have an adverse effect on the wildlife." Competitors can enter classes for pounds 3.
