NEARLY a quarter of a million people have lost their jobs in the biggest rise in unemployment for 28 years. Official figures released yesterday show 2.22 million are out of work. One in six 18 to 24-year-olds is already unemployed, even before this year's crop of school-leavers and newly qualified graduates join the job market. There were 31.32 million jobs in December, down 284,000 on the year before. Most sectors showed falls, with the biggest decreases in finance and business services. David Frost, of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: "Unemployment continues to rise in the face of a worsening recession. Businesses do not want to lose key employees, but they are struggling."
