25 years helping companies thrive; ANNIVERSARY: Organisation celebrates a quarter of a century aiding firms.Byline: By Jenny Waddington BUSINESS REPORTER A LEADING organisation, established in Coventry to help small, knowledge-based firms thrive, has reached a major milestone. The University of Warwick Science Park Opened in 1984, the University of Warwick Science Park is a joint venture between the University of Warwick and local authorities. It is now home to 130 High Technology Companies and employs a total workforce of 1,860. has just marked its 25th anniversary, during which time it has helped more than 1,000 companies - leading to many thousands of new jobs in the area. The Science Park was established during the recession of the early 1980s and has survived two more serious economic downturns before the current crunch (1) To process data. See number crunching. He said: "The world was very different in 1984 compared to today. Much of that is down to the type of companies we have helped to establish and grow here. "It is the small, knowledge-based businesses that have helped to drive change across the world and have made technology such a major part of our everyday lives. Because of that we have had to adapt and change. Our core principle has, however, remained the same. "We have given those people with an idea for a business or product the chance to come here and grow without constraints CONSTRAINTS - A language for solving constraints using value inference. "It is this approach that has helped us to survive economic crises in the past and which is why we are seeing many of our tenant companies thriving even during this recession." As well as offering flexible office and laboratory space, the Science Park has also helped firms with a range of programmes - from helping businesses to secure investment for innovation and growth, expand their markets nationally and internationally and gain access to new knowledge through student placements. Since it was unveiled 25 years ago as part of the main campus at the University of Warwick In the 1960s and 1970s, Warwick had a reputation as a politically radical institution.[3] More recently, the University has been seen as a favoured institution of the British New Labour government. , three further innovation centres have been established in Binley, in Coventry, Warwick and at Blythe Valley in Solihull.
