25 PERCENT OF SAN DIEGO BUS AND TROLLEY SERVICE
MAY BE LOST UNDER LATEST STATE BUDGET PLAN
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Representatives from area transportation agencies will hold an 11:15 a.m. news conference tomorrow, Thursday, Aug. 13, in the Metropolitan Transit Development Board (MTDB) offices at 1255 Imperial Ave., in the 10th floor board room, to address concerns about a state budget proposal that would decimate local public transit services.
San Diego County Supervisor and San Diego Trolley Inc. Chairman Brian Bilbray and San Diego Transit Corp. Chairman Linda Legrette will join MTDB Chairman James R. Mills, as well as officials from the Air Pollution Control District (APCD) and the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG).
If passed, the proposed budget would take $150 million from Transportation Development Act (TDA) funds that are dedicated for public transit purposes. TDA revenue is a critical element of the budget of every public transit system in California. TDA dollars are derived from one-fourth of a cent of the local sales tax and are dedicated for public transit purposes. Boiled down to the San Diego local level, this would translate to a 20 percent cut in TDA for San Diego transit operators, which in turn would generate an equivalent reduction in operating dollars that are generated from the farebox. These dual losses would result in an overall 25 percent reduction of regional transit services.
Should the legislature approve the budget and authorize the use of TDA dollars for non-transportation purposes, the impacts on every local public transportation system, including San Diego's bus and trolley services, will be devastating. This "hit" would be especially critical at a time when ridership trends have been increasing and more transit service is needed, not less.
