24Seven - Arts: City becomes a shanty town.

A HUGE number of shanties and sailors' songs mentioned Liverpool because the port was so famous during the days of the great sailing ships.

But Liverpool exported the Merseysound of the 60s (that's the 1860s) to the world a whole century before a bunch of Scouse scouse

 lads landed in Hamburg seeking fame and fortune.

And now Liverpool has one of the biggest and best Shanty shanty, in music: see chantey.  Festival events in Europe, putting the city back on the maritime map as a centre of international excellence, playing a key part in attracting thousands of visitors every year.

It all happens this weekend.

Highlights include: -Saturday, June 15 and Sunday June 16: Afternoons on ships, in pubs, around the Maritime Museum A maritime museum (sometimes nautical museum) is a museum specializing in the display of objects relating to ships and travel on seas and lakes. A naval museum focuses on navies and military use of the sea.  and even on the ferries around the Albert Dock Saturday, June 15: Evening club session in the Baltic Fleet pub, Wapping .

Saturday, June 15: Grand Festival Concert at the Neptune Theatre, Hanover Street, Liverpool featuring artists including La Moresca Antica (Milan), Les Souilles de Fond de Cale (Brittany) and Liverpool's own Hughie Jones, formerly of The Spinners. l Tickets cost pounds 6 (pounds 5 concessions) from the Neptune, 0151-709 7844.
