24Seven - Arts: Celebrating the Commonwealth.Byline: with Joe Riley THE Commonwealth Games Commonwealth games, series of amateur athletic meets held among citizens of countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. Originated (1930) as the British Empire games, the series is held every four years and is patterned after the Olympic games; women have participated present the perfect excuse to celebrate the vibrant arts culture of some of the Commonwealth countries. And here in Liverpool, one of the many events linking in with the Games is the staging of the biggest ever event by the Merseyside Dance Initiative, a performance under the Spirit of Friendship banner titled Exchange Flags. As part of the Regional Arts Lottery programme, MDI (1) (Multiple Document Interface) A Windows function that allows an application to display and lets the user work with more than one document at the same time. have been awarded pounds 15,000 towards the project. The dance team has been working with local people throughout Merseyside since March and their efforts will culminate in a large scale community dance performance linked to the Queen's Baton relay The Queen's Baton Relay, similar to the Olympic Torch Relay, is a relay around the world held prior to the beginning of the Commonwealth Games. The Baton carries a message from the Head of the Commonwealth, currently Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. , at the Pier Head on July 21. The event will not only feature the procession, but a 20-minute finale by all performers, with additional support from Osun Arts from Nigeria and the Ugandan Ndere Troupe. |
