E-mail Standards will Help Protect Consumer Privacy, Reduce

The guidelines are being circulated for input and comment from all interested parties. The organization's goal is to have formal adoption of the resulting standards across the e-mail marketing industry by early next year. RECA comprises a majority of the industry's major players.

24/7 Media has pledged full support of the draft RECA guidelines, premised on the FTC-endorsed Fair Information Practices, and designed to create and promote "best practices" for companies involved in online marketing and to foster action for the responsible use of e-mail. The RECA guidelines outlined earlier today include:
-- Notice: Informing users what personal information will be collected, by
whom, and for what purpose.

-- Consent: Providing users with e-mail on an opt-in basis only, and only in
connection to subject matter they've previously requested.

-- Access: Enabling subscribers to access their own personal information and
correct inaccurate data.

-- Security: Implementing technical measures such as encryption and
password-based access to ensure the safety and security of any
personally-identifiable information.

-- Enforcement: Ensuring that members that violate the standards set forth by
RECA will be subject to fines and expulsion from RECA
