24/7: WHEN & WHERE; Lew's lucky break.

Byline: JOE RILEY Arts editor

THERE is many a reputation (and subsequent fortune) that has been made by being in the right place at the right time.

Such an opportunity befell 17-year-oldUS college pupil Lew Allen in November 1956, when he set off for an assignment for his school magazine.

He was to attend a rock `n' roll concert in Cleveland,Ohio at which one of the artists was an aspiring young singer called Elvis Aaron Presley.

Earlier in the year,Elvis had scored hits with Heartbreak Hotel and Hound Dog.

Clearly, the future looked more than bright. About to be released was another song,Love Me Tender.

All this augured well for the high school lad with the 4x5 speed graphic camera which, thanks to the technology of the day, could take 12 pictures in a row without the need to reload (1) To load a program from disk into memory once again in order to run it. Reload is entirely different than reinstall. Reinstall means that you have to run the install program from a CD-ROM or floppy disk and perform the installation procedure over again. .

Little did Lew realise that, as fortune smiled down, he would be reloading his camera many times to immortalise Verb 1. immortalise - be or provide a memorial to a person or an event; "This sculpture commemorates the victims of the concentration camps"; "We memorialized the Dead"
immortalize, memorialise, memorialize, commemorate, record
 a legion of celebrities.

As luck would have it -and it did -there was a newspaper strike on the night of the Cleveland concert.

Far from being left in the background while the experienced press pack filled the complimentary seats at the front of the auditorium, Lew found himself the sole lens man for the event.

He was given a free run of the building, front and back stage.

The result is a remarkable set of pictures, now on show in Liverpool.

Lew's early Presley pictures have been incorporated into the Fingerprints Of Elvis exhibition at the Albert Dock.

Also featured are the legendary artists Lew went on to photograph as a result of that first big break.

They include Buddy Holly Noun 1. Buddy Holly - United States rock star (1936-1959)

Lew remembers well his meeting with the king of rock `n' roll: ``He seemed very happy.

``In one day, it is impossible to get to know someone well, but I was impressed by his politeness.
