The EWSD switch is the world's leading switching system. More than 150 million ports have been installed and the system is used by more than 300 operators in approximately 100 countries.

    The first system using the EWSD Switch will be deployed in Syracuse, N.Y. Siemens will be the switching system provider to 21st Century Telesis for 18 of the 27 markets, providing switching and network services. The Siemens switching platform, which includes the Smart Network concept, allows 21st Century to fulfill its plans of providing PCS and CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier) An organization offering local telephone service that is not one of the traditional telephone companies. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 allowed competition to the incumbent telcos (ILECs), enabling new companies (CLECs)  operations on the same platform.
