OCEANSIDE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 12, 2000

Hampton(TM), the national brand of mid-priced Hampton Inn(R) and Hampton Inn & Suites(R) hotels, and the California Federation of Women's Clubs women's clubs, groups that offer social, recreational, and cultural activities for adult females. Particularly strong in the United States, they became an important part of American town and village life in the latter part of the 19th cent. , in association with Caltrans, today announced the restoration of the 199th and 200th historic Bell Markers along the El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

 road in Oceanside.

Between 1906 and 1915, 400 bell markers were placed along the El Camino Real in California to mark and preserve the historic route, along which there are 21 missions. Nearly 100 years later, more than three million travelers a year stop to admire the symbols of California's history.

, Hampton(TM) has partnered with the California Federation of Women's Clubs to ensure these now-fading bell markers are preserved for millions of travelers to enjoy in the future," said Judy Christa-Cathey, senior director of marketing for Hampton Inn and Hampton Inn & Suites hotels.

Along with restoring two of the original El Camino Real Bells, Hampton and Caltrans will be unveiling a display featuring an illustration of the famous El Camino Real road.

The restoration event kicks-off at 10 a.m. at the Aliso Creek Rest Stop (southbound) in Oceanside, off Interstate 5. The day will begin with presentations from Hampton, the California Federation of Women's Clubs (which began in the early 1900s to help preserve California's historic Bell Markers), and a representative from Senator Bill Morrow's office. The City will proclaim October 12, 2000 "Explore the Highway With El Camino Real Bell Day" in honor of the preservation effort.

To accomplish the restorative work, Hampton donated $5,000 to the California Federation of Women's Clubs.

"With hundreds of Hampton hotels located along U.S. highways, we began last spring to look for a grassroots community initiative where our national chain and local hotels could actively make a difference in their communities," said Christa-Cathey. "Restoring the landmarks that travelers across this country cherish made perfect sense and was embraced immediately, as was the historic Bell Markers, which have been at the top of our list from day one."

The Bell Markers represent the fourth restoration project for "Explore the Highway with Hampton," which launched in April of this year. Since its launch, Hampton has completed refurbishment of the "Rain of Arrows" site celebrating native American history in Mancos, Colorado Mancos is a town in Montezuma County, Colorado, United States. It is particularly fitting to restore a landmark on the West Coast as Hampton increases its development focus on growing its presence in the West. Currently, there are more than 240 properties open west of the Mississippi, and Hampton plans to double its presence there in the next three years.
