Nearly half of the Property Management Association of Michigan's (PMAM) membership attended its sixth annual GLAStar Education Conference in 2008, helping the association exceed its revenue goals and generate a profit of more than $14,000. Of the 800 members invited to the event, 380 participated, a 50-person increase over 2007. PMAM distributed the majority of the conference profits to its four local chapters, based on the percentage of members who participated, thus ensuring the associations did not compete for education dollars. PMAM drew national speakers and crafted a well-rounded education program, which received outstanding member reviews. Keynote speaker Chad Hymas--the association's first non-apartment-industry keynote--shared his story of inspiration and hope and elicited the best reviews of any previous keynote speaker: Other presenters included Alex Jackiw, who spoke on managing different generations; Lisa Trosien, who spoke on marketing and technology; and Andrew Botieri, who delivered a presentation on leadership.

Since 1997. the Property Management Association of Michigan (PMAM) had fought to mitigate the burden of onerous housing inspections for "good" rental housing providers. In 2008. the association's 11 years of hard work paid off with the passage of Senate Bill 635 into Public Act 408. With the passage of the act. PMAM succeeded in shifting inspection resources to housing providers who put residents at risk. while rewarding community managers with solid safety records. The new law also amends the reporting structure of municipalities to prove that a reasonable fee is being charged and that all fees are related to performing inspections. To achieve this victory, state and local affiliates encouraged their members to participate in a grassroots effort to contact legislators by phone, fax and e-mail. The bill's passage ensures that PMAM members, who own more than 120,000 apartment homes statewide, will save thousands of dollars in inspection fees by increasing the inspection certificate from two to six years for compliant housing providers.
