Association Executive of the Year
For 11 years, Kathy Vallie has served as the Property Management Association of Michigan's (PMAM) Association Executive and, for just as long, she has lobbied the state to pass a housing inspection bill that would treat the apartment industry fairly. In 2008, after countless committee meetings, phone calls, letters and e-mails, her work translated into Public Act 408, which she estimates will save her members thousands of dollars each year. Vallie led PMAM to host an advanced instructor training course while still remaining within budget for 2008 and secured a new location for the association's annual education conference and trade show, which drew a crowd despite the worst snow storm in years. Also this year, Vallie spearheaded the formation of a Northern Michigan This article is about the region; for the university, see Northern Michigan University

Westborough Greensboro, NC--Burkely Communities, LLC
When Burkely Communities LLC, acquired the Friendly Hills community in January 2007, the community's roofs were in visibly poor condition, the buildings were dirty and unkempt and the cracked sidewalks were disasters-in-waiting. Despite its challenges, Burkely saw the potential of the well-located, 1970s-era community--the 37-acre tract of land is located in a desirable area of Greensboro, N.C. Today, the renamed Westborough community is on an upward trajectory, thanks to Burkely's transformative approach. Step one was to assemble the right team. Step two was to build a relationship with its residents by establishing trust. Step three was to develop a vision for the new community. Burkely invested in repairing and upgrading the community's interior and exterior and solicited resident involvement, which succeeded in improving the public's perception of the community. Working with a marketing consultant, Burkely was able to shape the Westborough brand and build resident satisfaction and a sense of community.

Property Management Association of Michigan
Nearly half of the Property Management Association of Michigan's (PMAM) membership attended its sixth annual GLAStar Education Conference in 2008, helping the association exceed its revenue goals and generate a profit of more than $14,000. Of the 800 members invited to the event, 380 participated, a 50-person increase over 2007. PMAM distributed the majority of the conference profits to its four local chapters, based on the percentage of members who participated, thus ensuring the associations did not compete for education dollars. PMAM drew national speakers and crafted a well-rounded education program, which received outstanding member reviews. Keynote speaker Chad Hymas--the association's first non-apartment-industry keynote--shared his story of inspiration and hope and elicited the best reviews of any previous keynote speaker: Other presenters included Alex Jackiw, who spoke on managing different generations; Lisa Trosien, who spoke on marketing and technology; and Andrew Botieri, who delivered a presentation on leadership.

Property Management Association of Michigan
Since 1997. the Property Management Association of Michigan (PMAM) had fought to mitigate the burden of onerous housing inspections for "good" rental housing providers. In 2008. the association's 11 years of hard work paid off with the passage of Senate Bill 635 into Public Act 408. With the passage of the act. PMAM succeeded in shifting inspection resources to housing providers who put residents at risk. while rewarding community managers with solid safety records. The new law also amends the reporting structure of municipalities to prove that a reasonable fee is being charged and that all fees are related to performing inspections. To achieve this victory, state and local affiliates encouraged their members to participate in a grassroots effort to contact legislators by phone, fax and e-mail. The bill's passage ensures that PMAM members, who own more than 120,000 apartment homes statewide, will save thousands of dollars in inspection fees by increasing the inspection certificate from two to six years for compliant housing providers.
