2008 JOB OUTLOOK WHICH CAREERS WILL BE HOT THIS YEAR? WHO IS HIRING? BEFORE WRITING A RESUME, SEE WHAT'S ON THE HORIZON.

Byline: BARBARA CORREA

Staff Writer

It's a new year, how about a new job?

Before dusting off that resume, it pays to find out who is hiring and which industries are hot. To answer those questions, the Daily News interviewed professional labor market labor market A place where labor is exchanged for wages; an LM is defined by geography, education and technical expertise, occupation, licensure or certification requirements, and job experience  analysts throughout Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, .

Retail

"Retail continues to go crazy out here," said Bruce Ackerman Bruce Arnold Ackerman (born August 19, 1943) is a famous constitutional law scholar in the United States. He is a Sterling Professor at Yale Law School and one of the most frequently cited legal academics in the country. Biography

. "Retail is now the top employer in the Valley."

The retail developments that he says should stimulate employment this year: the movie theater-office complex project in the North Hollywood Arts Hollywood Arts is a full-service art center opened in Hollywood, California. The program is unique in that it is designed to give homeless, runaway and at-risk teenagers access to the arts both for art therapy and to teach job-readiness and life skills that will help them get off  District slated to open next fall and the expansion of the Fashion Square Sherman Oaks mall.

Ackerman is bullish about renewed hiring once the writers strike, which has hurt local services from restaurants and dry cleaners to production-related businesses, is resolved. The entertainment industry employs about 115,000 people in the Valley, but with the strike, that total has been reduced by up to 15percent, he said.

"If they come back in a reasonable amount of time, we'll see a spike in related industries. It's going to reinvigorate the whole industry because when the writers walk, a lot of other things stop. You've got postproduction post·pro·duc·tion

, editing, staging, construction, transportation, and that should all start coming back on line."

Biotech rebirth

With the potential for the creation of a biotechnology cluster in Ventura County comes another growth possibility. Last summer, Amgen, Ventura County's largest employer, announced that it would eliminate several thousand jobs to help offset disappointing sales of its anemia drug, Aranesp.

The layoffs released a pool of talent that is now attracting venture-capital funding that might result in the creation of biotech companies and a source for hiring.

"This could be the next techno explosion," he said.

As for the other big industry that experienced massive layoffs last year, real estate professionals shouldn't expect to see any interest from employers for at least four to six months.

Health and education

Joe Magaddino, chairman of the department of economics at California State University Enrollment
, Long Beach, and co-author of the university's annual economic forecast report, said the health-care sector will continue to be the place to go for Long Beach job seekers.

"It looks good because it's not really a cyclical industry Cyclical Industry

," he said.

He also expects education to be a strong hiring sector in the coming year, and transportation and trade are holding their own, despite the feeling that scared consumers will stop shopping. That could slow imports, but rising exports should pick up that slack.

Overall, job seekers can expect a mixed bag in terms of job prospects.

After all, "We're on recession watch," said Jack Kyser, chief economist The Chief Economist is a single position job class having primary responsibility for the development, coordination, and production of economic and financial analysis. Still, he sees plenty of bright spots.
