2007 North American Education Programs focus on mobility and epidemiology. The North American North American named after North America. North American blastomycosis see North American blastomycosis. Education Programs (NAEP NAEP National Assessment of Educational Progress NAEP National Association of Environmental Professionals NAEP National Association of Educational Progress NAEP National Agricultural Extension Policy NAEP Native American Employment Program ) combine film presentations and in-person speakers at Society chapters each year. This year the topics are mobility and epidemiology epidemiology, field of medicine concerned with the study of epidemics, outbreaks of disease that affect large numbers of people. Epidemiologists, using sophisticated statistical analyses, field investigations, and complex laboratory techniques, investigate the cause . In "Getting There: Staying Mobile with MS," experts and people with MS confer together about strategies that minimize walking problems and maximize walking abilities. They are: * healthier lifestyle * exercise * assistive devices assistive device Public health Any device designed or adapted to help people with physical or emotional disorders to perform actions, tasks, and activities. See Americans with Disabilities Act, Architectural barriers, Assistive technology. . Moving keeps you going Exercise addresses two sides of the mobility coin--reducing the impact of fatigue and spasticity spasticity /spas·tic·i·ty/ (spas-tis´i-te) the state of being spastic; see spastic (2). spas·tic·i·ty n. 1. A spastic state or condition. 2. Spastic paralysis. and improving strength, flexibility, and general well being. The program reviews the particular benefits of various types of exercise, including stretching, tai chi Tai Chi Definition T'ai chi is a Chinese exercise system that uses slow, smooth body movements to achieve a state of relaxation of both body and mind. , and water exercise. Diet, medications, and fatigue management strategies to reduce symptoms are also discussed. Experts talk about home modifications Home Modification Alterations made to a home to meet the needs of people with physical limitations so they can live independently (to some degree) and safely. Examples of home modifications include removing throw rugs to prevent slips and falls, installing grab bars in the bathroom , adaptive cars, and future research and technologies. After all, getting around in your home and community doesn't have to be a daily contest of overcoming obstacles. What in the world is epidemiology? Do you remember "Where's Waldo"? The popular children's picture book shows crowds of people and somewhere in the crowd is Waldo. If Waldo were someone with MS, epidemiologists would want to know how many Waldos there are in a group. Epidemiology is the branch of medicine that studies disease in population groups as small as a neighborhood or as large as the entire world. Epidemiologists ask who gets a disease and why. The program, "The Clues of Epidemiology," offers a fascinating look into how scientists answer these questions. Big pictures yield patterns What has the study of epidemiology given us so far? That most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50; that twice as many women as men have MS; that MS occurs more frequently farther away from the equator; and that MS is more common in people of northern European heritage. Findings such as these are pinpointing areas for research. For example, migration studies provide evidence that MS is not a purely genetic disease. People who moved as adults from low-incident areas closer to the equator to higher-incident areas retain the low risk of their region of origin. However, their children who came to the high-incident region at a young age or who were born there have the same MS risk as the local population--a due that an environmental factor is at work. This has steered scientists to look at the role of vitamin D vitamin D Any of a group of fat-soluble alcohols important in calcium metabolism in animals to form strong bones and teeth and prevent rickets and osteoporosis. Coming to a chapter near you Each 30-minute video is packed with user-friendly information. Research scientists, medical professionals and people with MS present the facts, share their experiences, and offer advice, options, and strategies. Chapters will present these educational programs with a local expert to facilitate question and answer sessions. Participants will receive a program booklet which includes a glossary A term used by Microsoft Word and adopted by other word processors for the list of shorthand, keyboard macros created by a particular user. See glossaries in this publication and The Computer Glossary. of terms and a list of book, video, and Web site resources. Call your chapter for the program schedule.
