In its eighth year, this program supports the efforts of MTNA through donations to the MTNA FOUNDATION FUND in an individual's name. David T. Piersel is professor emeritus of music at South Dakota State University South Dakota State University, at Brookings; land-grant support; coeducational; chartered 1883 as Dakota Agricultural College, opened 1884. In 1907 it became South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, and in 1964 its present name was adopted. , where he served as director of keyboard studies for 22 years before retiring in May 2000. He also served in a similar position at Black Hills State University for 11 years. Piersel holds a B.M.E. degree from Simpson College and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Iowa Not to be confused with Iowa State University. The first faculty offered instruction at the University in March 1855 to students in the Old Mechanics Building, situated where Seashore Hall is now. In September 1855, the student body numbered 124, of which, 41 were women. . It has a center for archaeological investigation and a fisheries research laboratory. There is also a campus at Edwardsville. from 1978-2002 and is now emerita e·mer·i·ta adj. Retired but retaining an honorary title corresponding to that held immediately before retirement. Used of a woman: a professor emerita. n. pl. . While there, she was the head of class piano, studio piano, piano pedagogy and the keyboard development programs. Rogers wrote Achievement in Music: A Teacher's Guide to Piano and Theory, an important resource guide for implementing the Illinois State Music Teachers Association AIM program. In addition, she also has written articles in Clavier, American Music Teacher, Piano Guild Notes, The Music Educators Journal and Flute Talk. Rogers has also had many student competition winners in her 25 years of teaching. She instructs 30 students, the majority of which are adults, at her studio in Norman. Sallee earned bachelor's degrees in piano performance and vocal music education, and a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma University of Oklahoma, abbreviated OU, is a coeducational public research university located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. Founded in 1890, it existed in Oklahoma Territory near Indian Territory 17 years before the two became the state of Oklahoma. . In 1983, she was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar and studied for a year at the Hochschule for Musik in Vienna, Austria. As a composer and arranger, Sallee writes piano and choral music for Willis, Alfred, FJH FJH Franz Joseph Haydn (classical composer) FJH Friendswood Junior High (Friendswood, Texas) , Walton, Alliance and Carl Fischer. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Carol Schutzmann, NCTM, has been a member of the Gulf Coast Music Teachers Association, the Mississippi Music Teachers Association and MTNA since 1982. She obtained MTNA Professional Certification in piano in 1988. Schutzmann has operated an independent teaching studio in Long Beach, Mississippi Long Beach is a city (incorporated August 10, 1905) located in Harrison County, Mississippi, USA. It is part of the Gulfport-Biloxi, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 17,320. for 27 years. She has been GCMTA and MMTA MMTA MultiMedia Telecommunications Association MMTA Minor Metals Trade Association MMTA Missouri Music Teachers Association MMTA Minnesota Music Teachers Association MMTA Massachusetts Music Teachers Association MMTA Michigan Music Teacher's Association president and pre-college auditions chair. Schutzmann has held the composition competitions chair for MMTA and MTNA's Southern Division for four terms concurrently. She has worked regularly as an adjudicator, has attended many MMTA and MTNA conferences and was a presenter at the 1990 MTNA National Conference. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Carmen Shaw, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and an MTNA member since 1971, is an independent music teacher and a former faculty member at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh. She has presented sessions and participated on panels at MTNA national conferences and previously served on the MTNA Executive Board and the American Music Teacher Editorial Committee. She is also a former president of the Wisconsin Music Teachers Association. Shaw is a member of the MTNA Board of Directors, serving as the East Central Division director. Along with teaching, she is active as a collaborative performer, adjudicator, clinician and church musician. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Martha Kirkpatrick Smith, NCTM, has taught independently in Arlington, Virginia for 30 years and has presented pedagogy workshops in several states. She has a B.A. degree from Rice University and an M.M. degree in piano pedagogy from Catholic University of America Catholic University of America, at Washington, D.C.; the national university of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States; coeducational; founded 1887 and opened 1889. . Past-President of Northern Virginia MTA and of Virginia MTA, Smith has served on the Editorial Committee of American Music Teacher and the MTNA FOUNDATION FUND Teacher Enrichment Grant Committee. Currently she serves on the board of the MusicLink Foundation, as Certification chair for Virginia and chair of Northern Virginia MTA's Scholarship Endowment Fund. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The late James Somerville, NCTM, of Columbus, Ohio, graduated from the Ohio State University Ohio State University, main campus at Columbus; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1870, opened 1873 as Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, renamed 1878. There are also campuses at Lima, Mansfield, Marion, and Newark. with bachelor's and master's degrees in music. He taught in the public schools and was an independent music teacher for more than 40 years. Somerville served or was the chair on numerous Ohio Music Teachers Association committees at both the state and local level, as well as serving as chair of the MTNA Division Competitions. He was active as an adjudicator and clinician through the years and served as the chairman of the Columbus center of the National Guild of Piano Teachers for 39 years. Somerville died July 6, 2006. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The late Carol Elana Trapp joined the Pikes Peak Music Teachers Association, the Colorado Music Teachers Association and MTNA in 1996. She served the local association as treasurer, newsletter editor and festival chair, all the while attending many state and national conferences. She attended the National Piano Foundation's group piano seminar in Dallas, Texas, and credited it with transforming her studio. Trapp died in May 2006. She is being honored with an MTNA Fellowship by her colleagues, peers and friends because of her bright, sunny personality, her unfailing positive attitude and her dedication to the music teaching profession. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Sharon Wesbrook has been an MTNA member for 32 years. She taught public school music for three years and has taught piano for 30 years. Wesbrook has also been a church organist for 25 years. Her students have won some of North Dakota's finest piano competitions through the years. Wesbrook has been the NODAK NODAK North Dakota Music competitions chair since 2001. In addition to MTNA and NDMTA NDMTA North Dakota Music Teachers Association , she is a member of the American College of Musicians, National Federation of Music Clubs National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to Music Education and the promotion of creative and performing arts in the United States. , Minnesota Music Teachers Association and the Junior Composers Institute board of directors. In 1994, Wesbrook was selected NDMTA's first Teacher of the Year. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Nancy Whitman, of Lincoln, Nebraska, was formerly a member of the University of Nebraska at Kearney The University of Nebraska at Kearney (also known informally as UNK), founded in 1905 as the Nebraska State Normal School at Kearney, is the Kearney campus of the University of Nebraska system. music faculty and is now emeritus. She has served MTNA and the Nebraska Music Teachers Association in many capacities, including NMTA NMTA Northwest Marine Trade Association NMTA Nebraska Music Teachers Association president from 1987-1991. Whitman was also the West Central Division president, on the MTNA Board of Directors and the MTNA nominating committee. Currently, she is on the NMTA board of directors and is involved with several Lincoln arts organizations. Whitman also collaborates as a pianist with several performing groups. The first half was published in the August/September 2007 AMT See vPro. . 2008 Grant Guidelines and Forms Now Available Guidelines and application forms for the 2008 MTNA FOUNDATION FUND grants are now available on the FOUNDATION FUND website at www.mtnafoundation.org. Teacher Enrichment Grants are provided to music teachers for private study, specific college-level course work or other projects that will enhance the performing and teaching skills of the applicant. The MTNA FOUNDATION FUND awards grants to MTNA-affiliated local associations for projects that provide educational opportunities for students and teachers. Grants also are given for projects that support the promotion of music in the immediate community. Matching grants are available for established associations. Start-up grants are available for associations in the process of being formed. The purpose of the State Affiliate Matching Grants is to provide assistance to MTNA-affiliated state associations for professional and educational development of their state membership, along with the creation of innovative programs that will promote and enhance music and the development of music technology throughout the state, and to enhance and strengthen MTNA membership alliances in state associations.
