2006 Washington Wine Restaurant Award Winners Announced; Salty's on Alki Wins Restaurant of the Year, Sommelier of the Year.


SEATTLE -- The fourth annual Washington Wine Wine produced in the U.S. state of Washington has a long and continued history. The state ranks 2nd in the US in the production of varietal wine with over 31,000 acres (125 km² or 48.  Restaurant Awards, hosted last night by the Washington Wine Commission (WWC WWC Worldwide Classroom

) and the Seattle Times Company, honored 51 Washington restaurants for their commitment to supporting the Washington wine industry. Held at The Triple Door in Seattle, the Washington Wine Restaurant Awards recognizes restaurants across the nation that consistently go above and beyond to promote the state's quality wines.

Before an audience of more than 250 restaurant representatives, sommeliers, distributors, winemakers and wine press, the WWC presented awards to those restaurants and individuals who have done an exemplary job of showcasing Washington's world-class wines with their fabulous cuisine.

Erik Liedholm, wine director and sommelier at Seastar Restaurant & Raw Bar in Bellevue, Wash. was awarded the Walter Clore Dr. Walter J. Clore (July 1st 1911-Feb. 3, 2003) was a pioneer in wine growing and agricultural research in Washington State and has been formally recognized by the Washington State Legislature as the "Father of Washington Wine".[1].  Honorarium HONORARIUM. The Herbfarm in Woodinville, Wash. received the Most Innovative Wine List recognition for its outstanding selection of Washington wines. Northwest wines lead off every category on the Herbfarm's wine list, which also includes profiles of winemakers and winegrowers. The Herbfarm was honored as Restaurant of the Year in 2005.

Tied for the Most Improved Wine Program award were The Marc @ The Marcus Whitman Hotel in Walla Walla, Wash. and Brix 25 Degrees in Gig Harbor, Wash. who shared honors for increasing their Washington wine selections as well as creating new monthly wine programs to educate consumers and staff about Washington wines.

The Washington Wine Grand Award and the Washington Wine Award of Distinction commend those restaurants that designate menu and wine list space for Washington wines.

Washington Wine Grand Awards were awarded to 17 restaurants whose wine lists are comprised of 60 percent or more Washington wines and a minimum of 60 percent by-the-glass Washington wine selections. In addition, each of these restaurants feature Washington wines year-round through a number of promotional activities. Washington Wine Grand Award winners include:
