2006 TAPPI-PIMA Student Summit a success.The 2006 TAPPI-PIMA Student Summit was held January 14-16, 2006 at the Holiday Inn Select Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee For the ancient Egyptian capital, see . "With many of our industry leaders set to retire in the next five years, there are many opportunities for those just entering the industry. The Student Summit provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn about subjects that aren't taught in school--negotiation, communication, and behavior styles," noted Willis Potts, chairman of TAPPI TAPPI Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry . Forty students and five faculty advisors representing 17 universities in the United States, Canada, and Finland and 10 industry professionals attended the event. The team building began with the Saturday evening photo scavenger hunt through Beale Street and downtown Memphis. INTENSE PRESENTATIONS Sunday was a day full of intense presentations. The morning session focused on negotiation and communication skills. Bob Thompson of Buckman Laboratories, Inc., and Terri Creech of International Paper offered strategies and exercises to reinforce and improve one's negotiating and communication skills. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] In the afternoon, the students used the DiSC[R] "dimensions of behavior" tool to determine their behavioral styles. Denny Crumpler of MeadWestvaco then explained the strengths and weaknesses of each style and how to communicate with people whose strengths differ. The "communicator" had to verbally describe the model to his or her team without touching any of the supplied materials. The overall winning team was "Fame" followed by "Wolf Pack" and "Leafers." Once again, the Summit offered resume critiques. Terri Creech, REACH manager/staffing specialist with International Paper in Loveland, Ohio, reviewed students' resumes and provided feedback from a human resources perspective. FACILITIES TOUR The group toured two facilities on Monday morning, Cascades Tissue Group-Tennessee and Buckman Laboratories. Both organizations went to great lengths to explain their business and share practical solutions to their customers' problems.
