The boat partners serve as coaches and help in finding fishing locations and choosing baits. Although only the anglers with disabilities are fishing in the Open Competition, the boat partners whose anglers place in the top 10 also win. Awards and prizes are given to both anglers and boat partners. In the Bank Competition anglers who are disabled are paired with volunteers who assist them in whatever they cannot do themselves while fishing. Prizes are awarded based on the total weight of the 10 heaviest fish each day, for two days. The PVA Bass Tour, a B.A.S.S.-sanctioned event, is the nation's premier competitive fishing tournament for anglers with significant physical disabilities, such as spinal cord injuries and other mobility impairments. It has grown in a few short years into a nationwide event not just for veterans with disabilities, but also for the more than 50 million Americans in the disability community at large.
