2006 ICC model building codes available. The 2006 editions of the International Code Council (ICC ICC See: International Chamber of Commerce ) model codes are now available for adoption by local jurisdictions. NAA/NMHC actively were involved in the code development hearings to block several proposed changes that would have significantly increased construction costs. For instance, one proposal would have required all buildings more than 75 feet high to be retrofitted with sprinkler protection. Another would have required a complete air-barrier in the walls, ceilings and floors of apartment buildings more than three stories tall. To get an occupancy permit, buildings would have had to pass a pressure test (blower door A blower door is a device for testing the airtightness of a building. A blower door consists of a calibrated fan for measuring an air flow rate and a pressure sensing device to measure the pressure created by the fan flow. test) and repair any leaks. Other proposals would have re-instituted limits on the use of less expensive NM cable for taller buildings; NAA/NMHC fought for more than eight years to have the unnecessary restrictions removed from the codes. There are many apartment-related changes in the new codes. NAA/NMHC has summarized the new provisions in a special issue of the AIMS Building Codes Update, which is available on www.naahq.org See .org. (networking) org - The top-level domain for organisations or individuals that don't fit any other top-level domain (national, com, edu, or gov). Though many have .org domains, it was never intended to be limited to non-profit organisations. RFC 1591. . Apartment firms are encouraged to actively monitor the code adoption process in their local areas and to urge local officials to adopt the ICC codes without amending them. They should also discourage localities from mixing model building and fire codes from different organizations. Not only will these codes likely conflict with each other, they could create serious problems for existing buildings.
