It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges. : The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) is once again happy and privileged to grace the pages of Scholastic Coach and Athletic Director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic to share and introduce the world of women's basketball to fellow coaches and athletic administrators at all levels. While X's and O's remain a core practice in our sport, the WBCA National Convention is a time to focus more on the achievements of our membership and supporters by honoring them for their commitment and dedication to the game through several of our premiere awards. These awards include The State Farm Wade Trophy Wade Trophy is an award presented annually to the best women'scollege basketball player in NCAA Division I. The Wade Trophy, named after the late, three-time national champion, Delta State University coach Lily Margaret Wade. Player of the Year, the Kodak/WBCA All-America Teams, the RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA National Coach of the Year Awards, the Josten-Berenson Service Award, the Carol Eckman Award, and this year we have partnered with Avis to present the Avis USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Coaches' Trophy. In addition, we organize several grand events that present a stage where these awards are given. Perhaps the most popular is the "WBCA Night of All-Stars." This year, the University of Indianapolis The University of Indianapolis is a university located in Indianapolis, Indiana, and affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The shortened name it uses is UIndy. will provide their facilities as the setting for the doubleheader event on April 2, which features the WBCA High School All-America Game, presented by Nike and the only national collegiate senior All-Star game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games in the nation, the WBCA All-Star Challenge. You will not want to miss the best and brightest young talent in women's hoops! We take pride in putting on a wonderful show for our National Convention, but we take greater pride in our ability as a national coaches association to stay active and involved in issues that affect our sport. Marsha Sharp Marsha Sharp was the head coach of Texas Tech University's women's basketball team, the Lady Raiders, for 23 years. She retired following the 2005-2006 season. Sharp went to high school in Tulia, Texas, graduated from Wayland Baptist University in 1974 and earned a master's Head Coach-Texas Tech University WBCA Past President Women's Basketball Coaches Association "So You Want To Be A Coach" is made possible through the NCAA Matching Grants matching grant Academia Non-peer-reviewed funding in which a commercial enterprise, foundation, or philanthropy, federal government, contributes a sum of money that 'matches' a financial contribution made by an institution, university or hospital. for the Advancement of Minority Women Coaches. For qualification, the potential candidate must be a minority female basketball player who has exhausted her final year of basketball eligibility at a four-year institution by the first day of the workshop OR has graduated within the past year. In addition, the candidate's head coach, who must be an active WBCA member, has to nominate them. This past year, the NCAA also awarded the WBCA with scholarships for participants to use toward their travel and lodging for the workshop. The WBCA Board of Directors encourages all WBCA head coaches who have minority female athletes interested in coaching women's basketball, to nominate their players. This program was established to enable elementary school elementary school: see school. , middle school and high school students to share in the excitement of the NCAA Women's Final Four via a meaningful, creative, and interactive experience. Students are asked to create a design or drawing that signifies the "gracefulness, strength, passion, and competitiveness" of women's basketball; while incorporating the elements of Minute Maid's commitment to helping young women lead a "healthy, active lifestyle." Students are to submit their original designs and drawings to Minute Maid/Coca-Cola. Once all entries have been received, a specially formed committee from the Indianapolis Children's Museum Children's museums are institutions that provide exhibits and programs that stimulate informal learning experiences for children. In contrast with traditional museums that typically have a hands-off policy regarding exhibits, children's museums feature interactive exhibits that are will judge the submitted artwork for their originality and creativity; appropriateness to the theme; and overall composition and design. The Indianapolis Children's Museum and the WBCA will select four winners from each category: Grades Kindergarten-3; Grades 4-6; Grades 7-9; and Grades 10-12. One First Prize winner will then be selected from each of the four categories. From this pool, one Grand Prize winner will be selected to receive a $2,000 check and his/her winning artwork will be displayed on a commemorative com·mem·o·ra·tive adj.
