2005 Dental Assistants recognition week.


Thank you for sharing the old and new ideas of observing DARW around the world. We appreciate the time you took to honor DARW and the time and effort made to tell others in the field how it worked. We are pleased to present all the entries from the 2005 DARW competition.

Presented by Lucinda Johnson More than 60 toothbrush shaped pins were made and distributed to the school's affiliation sites and signs were made for each office announcing DARW. Ms. Molar and Tooth Fairy were in evidence at campus sites staffing tables that ran a raffle for a nearby crisis center and visiting clinics and handing out toothpaste. NORTH MANKATO, MN

A fun-filled and busy week marked the first week-long observation of DARW by this school's faculty and students. A gift or Recognition buttons and note pads was made to the students on Monday and on Tuesday and Thursday students held a toothbrush exchange. On Wednesday the college president spoke to the students and was presented with a DARW button and a certificate of appreciation. Thursday saw the faculty treating the D.A. students to an indoor picnic.

T-shirts were designed and worn for the duration of DARW. Head Start and other local preschoolers were invited to drop in and learn about the dental office, dental assisting and get educated about oral hygiene, dangers of smokeless tobacco, nutrition and other timely topics. Each received a toothbrush donated by Sunstar Butler. 75 high school students were invited to drop in and learn about dental assisting and the tools of the trade, and the week was capped by a luncheon for students and staff provided by the South Dakota Dental Assistants Association.

To celebrate DARW, 17 D.A. students and five faculty were treated to lunch and entry to the Edventure Center in Columbia, SC. Participants enjoyed childlike play in the Center and learned about the educational resources available. Large scale tooth models had been created by the students in their morphology classes the previous fall and were on display at the Center.

NORTHEAST METRO CAREER AND TECHNICAL CENTER

WHITE BEAR LAKE, MN

A service project for DARW was initiated "Operation Plaque Attack." This was aimed at benefiting the U.S. Armed Forces in Iraq and involved collecting healthy snacks such as sugar-free gum and pretzels along with oral health care products and sending them overseas.

Essays and posters were required of students and they were asked to focus on why they chose dental assisting for a career, how they planned to impact the dental community and what the DARW projects meant to them and their schools. On a hands-on level they set up a booth in the school and provided brushing and flossing instructions and distributed free toothpaste.

Annual events for this school include a DARW luncheon at which students receive a T-shirt to be worn when attending the Hinman Dental Meeting. Fund-raising activities are also conducted with the J.C. Lewis Health Center Union Mission for the purpose of providing funding for dentures and partials for the homeless. A video detailing this activity was made and presented at a Hinman table clinic.

An effort to boost membership was undertaken during DARW by this local component and it involved calling all members who hadn't yet renewed. They also set up a booth at an alumni meeting and and gave away pins and pens and information on continuing education and membership and sold T-shirts. Donations of toothpaste and oral hygiene information went into backpacks being coordinated for kids by Second Harvest as well as donating dress clothing to an organization helping disaster victims. A true outreach effort in honor of the profession.

Postcards were sent to all North Dakota dental offices reminding them of the importance of dental assistants and drawing attention to DARW. NDDAS board members visited two area dental assisting programs on March 11 and distributed door prizes and made presentations concerning the importance of belonging to ADAA.

Members met in mid-March to observe DARW and to celebrate their local's 75th Birthday with hats, whistles and a cake. Officers were presented with flowers recognizing their service to the local, and all attendees received a dental design change purse. Education was recognized too with a presentation from Ivoclar Vivadent's representative on soft tissue lasers.

A 3x6-foot banner was hung by a satellite hospital entrance affording thousands of doctors, nurses, staff and patients to become aware of DARW! A smaller banner hung in Dr. Schmidt's office. This was followed by a Friday afternoon treat of closing the office at noon and treating the staff to a movie. They were also treated to a personal thank you note, a flower and a $100 bill.

A week of special attention started with unveiling a window with the theme "Hats Off to Dental Assistants" and office sign featuring the D.A.'s names. An ad in the local paper gave dental assistants public recognition and within the clinic, a video rental gift certificate and additional vacation hours were awarded. This was the first observation of DARW in the office which reported that "It has created a positive buzz ... and that's what counts."

A photo collage of the practice's assistants was prominently displayed in the office and a luncheon was given in their honor. Previous DARW entries and awards were also displayed. Doctors Crosswell and Atanase were speakers at the Connecticut Dental Society monthly meeting and they took this opportunity to introduce their assistants and to laud all assistants for the contributions they make to dentistry. In honor of DARW, the office made dental contributions to a local women's shelter, veterans' home and the Women's-Infant-Children Center monthly meeting introduced the office's assistants.

Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of the clinic, Dr. Jeff Moos sent a memo to all doctors and staff recognizing DARW and congratulating their dental assistants on their productivity and the contribution they make to the practice. They received a big "thank you" for being the jack of all trades and for their comprehensive support.

A banner on the exterior of the office's building announced DARW to passersby and expressed the appreciation of the practice. Luncheon and a specially decorated cake were presented to the assistants on March 9.

A luncheon was held in their honor at the Community Club with Col. Garland Williams thanking them for their service and presenting each with his commander's coin of excellence. The entire team was treated to attendance at the 2005 Tri-Service Dental Society Annual Conference in Tokyo providing them with 19.5 hours of CE and a world class dinner reception.

The Group Commander proclaimed DARW officially and the doctors kicked off the week by cooking and serving breakfast. Then, day by day, certificates of appreciation and balloons were distributed, multiple prizes were awarded in a drawing, an article was published in the base newspaper, a special cake was decorated and served and finally on Friday a luncheon was given and Wild Dental Rodeo was held. Finally, all dental assistants were dismissed early on Friday.

Dental officers, civilian and contract dentists hosted a Hawaiian luau and invited all dental assistants, hygienists and auxiliary dental personnel. Dental lapel pins featuring each individual dental specialty were presented along with flower leis.

FORT DRUM, NY

DENTAC assistants and their fellow dental professionals participated in the Shamrock Run on March 17. A special recognition breakfast for civilian and military assistants was given and recent graduates of the Red Cross dental assistant training program were presented with their certificates. Other assistants were recognized with performance appraisal awards and certificates. A cake cutting ceremony ended the week.

A luncheon honoring the 94th anniversary of the U.S. Army Dental Corps kicked off DARW observation at Ft. Gordon. Assistants were treated to this luncheon by the officers of the Tingat Dental Clinic. Throughout the week assistants were presented with certificates of appreciation and treats of luncheon and flowers and snacks. One hour off was also given.

FORT LEE, VA

Signs throughout the clinic and a special cake every day made DARW special at Ft. Lee. On Friday, all dental assistants (and the clinic's one dental technician) were given certificates of appreciation and honored for their contribution at a ceremony. All assistants were treated to a luncheon.

The Post marquee carried a message about DARW and an article was prepared for the Post paper. Dentists and NCOICs barbecued for lunch and served the assistants.

FORT LEWIS, WA

The Okubo Clinic created a board with the names and photos of all dental assistants prominently displayed in the reception area. At the clinics at various times, luncheon and flowers were served or a breakfast buffet or pizza was offered. Daily prizes, raffles, goodie bags, certificates of appreciation and a good time was had by all.

FORT MEADE, MD

Banners were installed in each of the clinics for DARW and dentists took turns providing a continental breakfast each day. The Rader Dental Clinic presented flowers and a continental breakfast for openers and closed with a pizza party sponsored by the NCOs and doctors. In between, fliers were posted praising the assistants for their professionalism and dedication.

FORT STEWART, GA

An article in the Post newspaper and an electric bulletin board at the entrance to Ft. Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield Hunter Army Airfield (IATA: SVN, ICAO: KSVN), along with Fort Stewart, is a military complex located near Savannah, Georgia, United States. It is the home of the 3rd Infantry Division of the United States Army.  installations announced DARW and a personalized certificate of appreciation plus a special pin made the event special for the assistants. There were raffles with popular service and merchandise prizes donated by local merchants. Highlight of the week was a luncheon and river cruise on the Georgia Queen.

FORT WAINWRIGHT, AK

"Dental Assistants Make America Smile" was the slogan on the T-shirt that DENTAC Commander Col. Hamilton purchased for all the assistants at Ft. Wainwright and Ft. Richardson, Alaska. Also the Ft. Wainwright assistants were treated to luncheon and included three Red Cross dental assistants in training.

GRAFENWOEHR DENTAL CLINIC, GERMANY

Each morning of DARW dawned with a different array of breakfast treats. Then added attractions included a movie night complete with popcorn and soft drinks and pizza/lasagna lunch and an afternoon of free bowling at the base alley. Everyone received a certificate of appreciation and certificates offering 50% off on an international trip, a free ski trip with lift tickets, and free bowling rentals.

HOHENFELS DENTAL CLINIC, GERMANY

Baseball caps and bowling-related gift certificates started off the week along with a certificate for 50% off on any international trip in Europe. A personal thank you from the entire clinic staff and gifts were given at a complimentary dinner hosted by doctors, hygienists and soldiers.

SHAPE DENTAL CLINIC COMMAND

At the Supreme Headquarters Allied Power Europe (SHAPE) Dental Clinic Command luncheon, banners and blooms provided recognition for dental assistants who received a certificate of appreciation and flowers at a clinic luncheon.

An all-you-can-eat buffet, picnic lawn games and a day at Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park Hawaiian Waters Adventure park opened on May 26, 2000. VICENZA DENTAL ACTIVITY, ITALY

Flowers and a thank you note started the week followed by a brunch prepared and served by the docs and NCOs of the clinic complete in dress blue uniforms. Every day there was some sort of recognition or perk for the dental assistants whose work is obviously valued the other 51 weeks of the year as well.

Gratitude was the DARW theme here and thank you banners to the dental assistants were posted in 12 different languages. Brunch and lunch were given and a competition Bake Off was held with the winner receiving a 60-minute professional massage gift certificate. Friday brought a giant raffle and every dental assistant won something.

WALTER REED ARMY HOSPITAL

WASHINGTON, DC

Food, glorious food, in the break room every morning drew attention to DARW and gift drawings twice daily that ran the gamut from movie rentals to a portable TV. A buffet luncheon was the setting for presentation of a carnation and certificate of recognition. The week ended with a daiquiri and pinata party.

WUERZBURG DENTAL ACTIVITY

GERMANY

Dental assistants were the focus of attention at the U.S. Army hospital with breakfast each morning and coupons for steak house and Burger King meals also given. There was also a pizza party. Each assistant received a gift certificate for a massage.
