Industry analyst In-Stat/MDR has reported that 2004 was a boom year for the mobile modem market, with the market growing 167% from 2003 to 2004.

The market research firm said it estimated that the market would be shipping 14m wireless modems by 2009, from 2.5m in 2004. The data was gathered from the first three quarters of 2004 and estimates of fourth quarter results. The company found that initial growth in the future will come from cellular modem A wireless adapter that connects a laptop computer to a cellular telephone system for data transfer. Cellular modems, which contain their own antennas, plug into a PC Card slot or into the USB port of the computer and are available for a variety of wireless data services such as GPRS,  cards (PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, San Jose, CA, www.pcmcia.org) An international standards body and trade association that was founded in 1989 to establish a standard for connecting peripherals to portable computers. A spokesperson for In-Stat/MDR said that the build-up of high-speed wireless 3G networks and UMTS networks has led to the rapid growth in the market, reports Cellular News.
