His story: A converted closer who was 2-3 with 12 saves and a 2.08 ERA last season and represented the JetHawks on the California League The California League is a minor league baseball league which operates throughout the state of California. Before 2002, it was classified as a "High-A" league, indicating its status as a Class A league with the highest level of competition within that classification, and the fifth  all-star team. He received a midseason promotion to Double-A El Paso El Paso (ĕl pă`sō), city (1990 pop. 515,342), seat of El Paso co., extreme W Tex., on the Rio Grande opposite Juárez, Mex.; inc. 1873.  (Texas). He is slated to be the opening-day starter despite not having started a game since 2001 with rookie-level Missoula (Mont.) in the Pioneer League.

His story: Selected in the 31st round of last year's draft out of San Jacinto San Jacinto, river, c.130 mi (210 km) long, rising in SE Texas as the West Fork and flowing S to Galveston Bay. Its chief tributary is Buffalo Bayou, and both the bayou and the lower river are used for the Houston ship channel.  Junior College in Houston, Goocher was used exclusively out of the bullpen last season at short-season Yakima (Wash.), where he made the Northwest League's postseason all-star team, going 3-1 with a 2.73 ERA.

Michael Watson

His story: A 27th-round selection in 2001 out of Arizona Western College Arizona Western College (also AWC) is a public community college located in Yuma, Arizona. The school's sports teams are called the Matadors and the school colors are cardinal and gold. They participate in the NJCAA, the ACCAC, and the WSFL.  of Southern Nevada. McMachen had a breakthrough year in 2003 after failing to make a team to start the season. A junk-ball specialist, McMachen split time between the starting rotation and the bullpen, going 7-4 with a 3.61 ERA.

State, White, considered a prized Diamondbacks' prospect before suffering a shoulder injury in 2002, will try to resurrect his career in a second JetHawks stint. White was ineffective at Lancaster in 2002, going 0-3 with a 10.24 ERA before suffering a season-ending broken wrist after being struck by a line drive. He was 1-3 with a 6.23 last season at Double-A El Paso.

Enrique Gonzalez

Age: 21

Hometown: Bolivar, Venezuela

His story: Signed as a non-drafted free agent in 1998, Gonzalez is starting his sixth year in pro ball and his second stint in Lancaster. He struggled with the JetHawks in 2002, going 1-4 with a 12.27 ERA but emerged as a dominant reliever last season at South Bend, Ind., where he was 4-3 with three saves and a 2.13 ERA.

Justin Wechsler

Age: 24

Hometown: Pendleton, Ind.

His story: A fourth-round selection in 2001 out of Ball State (Ind.), Wechsler started the season in the bullpen before becoming one of the team's most consistent starters for much of the season. He developed a shoulder injury in the last month that limited his effectiveness. Crucial to his development is improving his command. Last season, he led the California League with 64 walks.

Phil Avlas

Age: 21

His story: A defensive catcher drafted in the 24th round of the 2001 draft, Avlas has a plus arm according to scouts, meaning his 1.7-second throws to second base are above the major-league average. He needs to become a consistent hitter. He hit .333 in 17 games at Yakima, Wash., highlighted by a four-double game, but hit .203 in 47 games at South Bend, Ind.

Daniel Tosca

His story: Drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth round of the 1999 draft out of Durant High in Florida. Tosca is thought to have power potential, although he's hit just 10 home runs in his pro career.

Matt Morgan

Keoni DeRenne

His story: Considered an Atlanta Braves prospect two years ago, DeRenne signed with the Diamondbacks as a free agent in January. He played for Team USA in the 1998 World Championships' qualifying round. After being slated to start the season in Double-A El Paso, DeRenne was assigned to Lancaster late last week and will start the season as the team's everyday shortstop.

Carlos Quentin

His story: Quentin helped lead Stanford to the 2003 College World Series final despite playing with a right elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. A first-round draft selection in 2003, Quentin is projected to bat cleanup and is a polished defensive outfielder who hits for power and average.

Brandon Simon
