2004 Father of the Year Winners Announced; Five Bay Area Fathers Share Honors; Gala Event Benefiting the American Diabetes Association Planned.

The Father's Day Council of San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  announced today the 2004 Fathers of the Year. The winners will be honored at a gala dinner benefiting the American Diabetes Association The American Diabetes Association, or the ADA, is an American health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. Founded in 1940, the American Diabetes Association conducts programs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, reaching hundreds of  June 8. The honorees are Ralph Barbieri Ralph Barbieri is a sports radio personality in San Francisco, California. Along with Tom Tolbert, Barbieri hosts the afternoon sports radio show The Razor and Mr. T on station KNBR. Diabetes is the sixth deadliest disease in the nation and costs more than $100 billion annually in health care and lost productivity. There are 18.2 million people in the United States, or 6.3% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 13 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, 5.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease.

The American Diabetes Association is the nation's leading voluntary health organization concerned with diabetes and its complications. Founded in 1940, the Association provides services in communities nationwide. The mission of the American Diabetes Association is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

The 2004 Father of the Year Awards dinner will be held 6:00 pm, June 8, at the Westin St. Francis in San Francisco. The public is invited. Tax deductible individual tickets cost $200.
