2004 CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW: HART, CANYON ARE RUN-AWAY FAVORITES.

Byline: Lauren Gustus Staff Writer

When Hart High's Brooke Russell came into view at the State Championship meet in Fresno last season, her coaches had a feeling something was wrong with their top runner.

They were right.

Spread out over the course, they weren't near Russell when she fell on a steep hill Steep Hill is a popular tourist street in the historic city of Lincoln, UK.

At the top of the hill you will find the entrance to the Cathedral and at the bottom is Well Lane. The Hill consists of independent shops, tea rooms and pubs.
nearly a mile in. They learned about it only after the race.

``She was working off the adrenaline adrenaline (ədrĕn`əlĭn, –lēn): see epinephrine.  and the pain at the same time,'' head coach Larry David said.

The spill cost Russell valuable seconds but she kept going and, in a late push, made up enough ground to finish as the sixth-best runner in California in Div. I. David estimated she would have finished as high as third or fourth if not for the fall.

There are two near certainties in the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  cross country picture this season, and Russell is one of them. With a year of experience behind her, she's come into her sophomore year in good shape and with an improved understanding of what she must do to take care of herself.

She has emerged as the one to beat, though Shannon Murakami of Saugus and the Canyon girls should challenge.

``Everybody at their best, Brooke still wins by a pretty convincing margin,'' David said.

Sophomore Katie Kykendall should be the No. 2 runner behind Russell and David expects the rest of the lineup A criminal investigation technique in which the police arrange a number of individuals in a row before a witness to a crime and ask the witness to identify which, if any, of the individuals committed the crime.  to shake out as the season progresses.

The other sure bet is the overall strength of the Canyon program, which has won the girls' Foothill League title for 10 consecutive years and the boys' title for five.

Jesse Locke anchored the girls' team in 2003 - Canyon finished third in Div. I at the state meet - and will do so again this year. She's out for the start of the season with a minor injury, but she should be motivated to finish strong in her senior year. She's joined by Brenda Cohen cohen

 and Kelli Corbitt.

The boys' side was bolstered by transfer Salim Benmohammed, a senior who came from Monroe High of North Hills. He, Adam McDonald and Tommy Werner Tommy Werner (born March 31 1966) was a freestyle swimmer from Sweden. He won the silver medal in the Men's 4x200 m Freestyle Relay at the 1992 Summer Olympics together Christer Wallin, Anders Holmertz and Lars Frölander. Clubs

``Our strength is our depth,'' coach Dave DeLong said. ``It's the quality of our top seven versus having one star ... there are some good individuals out there but team-wise we hope and believe we're it.''

--Vikings' growth: Valencia's cross country program is moving in the right direction.

When Mike Wetzel took over the team four years ago, he had less than 20 runners. This year there are close to 60.

Wetzel co-coaches with his wife, Irene, who works with the girls. The two coaches run with the teams, usually before school.

``They know I can relate to what they feel at certain points. That's important. It's hard to tell a kid you need to do this when you've never done it.''

The Vikings' boys' team will be led by Kenny Westbrook, Kevin Lee and Brandon Johnson Brandon Johnson (born May 5, 1983) is an American football player who currently is a free agent. Senior Katherine DeHoyos should lead a relatively young girls' team.
