 Student Competitions consist of three levels: State Competition, Division Competition and National Finals.

General Guidelines for the 2003-2004 MTNA Student Competitions

The application guidelines and competitions rules have been simplified and streamlined for 2003-2004. Please read all information carefully and completely.

Application forms are no longer included in the American Music Teacher. Please refer to page 42 for information on how to apply and receive an application if desired.

Please note: The application deadline for all states is September 9, 2003. All mailed applications must be postmarked on or before that date. All online and faxed applications must be received by 12:00 midnight on September 9, 2003.

Performance Competitions

Junior Performance

* Age: 11-14 as of December 1, 2003

* Competitions: Brass, Percussion, Piano, String and Woodwind

Senior Performance

It encompasses parts of Jackson, Clay, Cass, and Platte counties and is the anchor city of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area, the second largest in Missouri, which includes counties in both Missouri and Kansas. . MTNA Member Teachers

* Current membership dues for MTNA and the affiliated state association for the state in which the student enters the competition must be paid on or before September 9, 2003.

* A national winner may not participate in the same competition category again.

* Facilities permitting, competition performances (including winners' concerts) are open to the public. Competition rehearsals are closed to the public.

Revised Repertoire Programs and Repertoire Changes

* Changes in repertoire may be proposed only between state and division competitions, and must be approved by the appropriate national competitions coordinator (Junior, Senior, Young Artist, Chamber Music).

* Proposed changes must be submitted for approval via e-mail or mail to the appropriate national competitions coordinator no later than December 1. The complete revised program must be submitted.

Competition Music

* All entrants and accompanists must abide by the federal Copyright Law. Photocopies are strongly discouraged.

* Entrants in the solo performance competitions must provide the adjudicator(s) one score for each work listed on the application form. Solo instrumentalists may submit either the solo part or the complete score.

* Ensembles in the Chamber Music Competition must the adjudicator(s) one score or one complete set of parts.

* Measures must be numbered at the beginning of each system.

* Students must perform the repertoire listed on the original application unless a revision has been submitted and approved by the appropriate national coordinator between the state and division competitions. All scores must be submitted for verification prior to the entrant's performance.

Accompanists

* Teachers may accompany their own students or another teacher's students at any level of the competition.

To enter you will need repertoire information, and your teacher's name, address, telephone number and e-mail. Online applicants also will need a valid credit card number. Entry fees are nonrefundable.

* Brass (Trumpet trumpet, brass wind musical instrument of part cylindrical, part conical bore, in the shape of a flattened loop and having three piston valves to regulate the pitch. , Horn, Euphonium euphonium

* Awards are made possible by Conn-Selmer, Inc.

* The national winner receives $500. The national winner's teacher receives $200. National finalists receive a $100 merit award.

Percussion, String and Woodwind

* Awards are made possible by the MTNA FOUNDATION.

* National winners receive $500. National winners' teachers receive $200. National finalists receive a $100 merit award.

Piano

* Awards are made possible by the Baldwin Piano Company.

* The national winner receives $1,000. The national winner's teacher receives $200. National finalists receive a $100 merit award and a $200 travel award.

* Only original solo keyboard compositions or published transcriptions for the piano will be accepted.

* Memorization is required for all repertoire.

* Concerto performances are not permitted.

* Compositions for prepared piano A prepared piano is a piano that has had its sound altered by placing objects (preparations) between or on the strings or on the hammers or dampers.

* The program must contain stylistically varied compositions appropriate to the instrument, and must include selections from at least two contrasting style periods. Transcriptions may be included.

* Memorization is not required.

* Entrants may perform on any instrument(s) of their choice within a category.

* The entrants will be allowed a maximum of thirty (30) minutes performance time.

MTNA-Yamaha Senior Percussion Competition Repertoire Requirements

* The program must contain:

* at least one selection for a keyboard percussion instrument

* at least one selection for a non-keyboard percussion instrument

* Memorization is not required.

* The entrants will be allowed a maximum of thirty (30) minutes performance time.

For the National Finals of the percussion competition, MTNA will furnish a 4 1/3 octave marimba, one set of four timpani (32", 29", 26", 23"), a timpani throne, one bass drum and stand, and one tam-tam and stand. All other percussion equipment must be furnished by the entrant. MTNA is not responsible for the quality or sounding surface of the marimba available to MTNA in the conference city.

MTNA-Yamaha Senior Piano Competition Repertoire Requirements

* State Competition: The selected solo program must contain stylistically varied compositions, and must include selections from at least two contrasting style periods. Transcriptions may be included. The entrant will be allowed a maximum of twenty-five (25) minutes performance time.

At the Division Competition, the state winner will be required to perform one movement of a major work for piano and orchestra in addition to the solo repertoire. The state winner and alternate must submit the information for the major work to the state coordinator by the close of the State Competition.

* Division Competition: In addition to the solo repertoire that meets the requirements for the State Competition, the entrant must perform one movement of a major work for piano and orchestra. The entrant will be allowed a maximum of thirty (30) minutes performance time.

* National Competition: Same as Division Competition.

* Memorization is required for all repertoire.

* Compositions for prepared piano are not permitted at the request of competition hosts and piano companies providing instruments.

MTNA FOUNDATION Senior Voice Competition Repertoire Requirements

* The program must include four selections of the entrant's choice, including two non-English art songs, one English art English art is the body of visual arts originating from the nation of England, in the form of a continuous tradition. MTNA FOUNDATION Young Artist Organ Competition Repertoire Requirements

* The program must contain stylistically varied compositions appropriate to the instrument, and must include selections from at least two contrasting style periods. Transcriptions may be included.

* At the request of the entrant, a page turner will be provided at the division and national competitions provided the competition coordinator is notified at least two weeks before the competition.

Entrant Eligibility

* The average age of ensemble members must be 18-26 as of December 1, 2003.

* Ensemble members may not enter in more than one state.

* Ensemble members may not enter in more than one ensemble.

National Awards

* The winning ensemble is required to perform on the winners' recital at the 2004 MTNA National Conference in Kansas City, Missouri.

* Awards are made possible by the Allen I. McHose Scholarship Fund.

* The winning ensemble receives $3,000.

Ensemble Requirements

* The ensemble must consist of at least three (3) performers and may have no more than six (6) performers.

* During the course of a performance, an ensemble may change in size, through the addition or subtraction subtraction, fundamental operation of arithmetic; the inverse of addition. Elementary:

* Age: 14-18 as of December 1, 2003

* Entry Fee: $35

Young Artist:

* Age: 19-26 as of December 1, 2003

National Awards

* Awards are made possible by Warner Bros. Publications, Inc.

* Elementary winner receives $300; Junior winner receives $400; Senior winner receives $700; Young Artist winner receives $1,000. All national winners receive a plaque.

* Winners are expected to be present at the national conference to receive their awards.

MTNA Member Teachers

* Current membership dues for MTNA and the affiliated state association for the state in which the student enters the competition must be paid on or before September 9, 2003.

* An MTNA collegiate member must pay active membership dues to enter students in the competitions.

Nonmember Teachers

* Nonmembers have the option of becoming a member of MTNA or paying a Teacher Entry Fee of $150. This fee will allow the teacher to enter one or more students into the various MTNA competitions, provided all other eligibility requirements are met.

Entrant Information

* If there is only one entrant in a State-level category, there will be NO State Competition. The entrant's composition will advance directly to the Division Competition.

* If there is only one entrant in a Division-level category there will be NO Division Competition. The entrant's composition will advance directly to the National Finals.

Submission Requirements

* An entrant may submit only one composition.

* The performance time may not exceed ten (10) minutes.

* A composition may be in any style for any medium.

* A composition that includes a copyrighted text must include a written statement from the copyright holder giving permission to use the text. If the text is in the public domain, a signed statement indicating this fact must accompany the manuscript manuscript, a handwritten work as distinguished from printing. The oldest manuscripts, those found in Egyptian tombs, were written on papyrus; the earliest dates from c.3500 B.C. .

* A fully realized score, completely notated by the composer, is required. The manuscript must be in the composer's handwriting HANDWRITING, evidence. Performance Requirements

* The composition of each national composition competition winner will be performed at the 2004 MTNA National Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. Winners must provide their own musicians and must be present at the performance.

* Winning compositions must be performed at the national conference on the instruments for which the composition was written.

* Teachers may perform a student's composition at any level.

* For compositions using unusual instruments and for compositions for large ensembles (6 or more performers), the use of a videotaped performance at the national conference is permitted.

* Performance parts are required for performances at the state, division and national concerts, but do not need to be submitted with the original application materials.

Competition Rules

* A student may enter the competitions in only one state.

* Entrants must have prepared the composition with the teacher listed on their Official Application Form.

* Competition financial obligations are the responsibility of the entrant.

* A national winner may not participate in the same competition category again.
