2003 Sensational spaces: the winners of our annual interior design competition. What gives a room great style? Is it rich and unusual fabrics, or intricate painting techniques? Is it carefully chosen furnishings, or just the right accessories? For a skillful skill·ful adj. 1. Possessing or exercising skill; expert. See Synonyms at proficient. 2. Characterized by, exhibiting, or requiring skill. designer, a well-planned room is much more than just the sum of its parts. It takes a talented eye to bring together so many different elements in a manner that is appealing but not overbearing, sophisticated but still comfortable. From the looks of the scores of beautiful photographs we received along with the entries in our second annual design contest, Mississippi certainly has more than its fair share of gifted designers and well-dressed homes. Our judges agreed that selecting the winners in ten categories was a daunting daunt tr.v. daunt·ed, daunt·ing, daunts To abate the courage of; discourage. See Synonyms at dismay. [Middle English daunten, from Old French danter, from Latin task, especially with such a large number of entries this year. Each of the winning rooms possessed more than just outstanding individual design elements--those elements had been pulled together in such a creative, yet seemingly effortless, way that the whole space looked like it deserved to be on the pages of a magazine. And so it will. But don't think that only professional designers can pull off an amazing room transformation. By drawing inspiration from the experts, anyone can achieve great style in their own home. To prove it, we pulled a few of our favorite fresh ideas from the spaces entered n this year's competition into a special feature that follows our winning rooms. On behalf of the judges of the 2003 Sensational Spaces Interior Design Competition, we hope the rooms you'll see on the next several pages will delight, surprise, and inspire you. JUDGES' CHOICE Architect Sam Coker and his wife Jan worked with designer Mellany C. Kitchens, CKD See count-key-data. , of Kitchens Unique in Madison to create the kitchen of their dreams, and from our judges' view, it looks like a dream come true. At first glance, it's easy to see that this is no ordinary kitchen. Where one might expect traditional cabinets, there are two custom-designed alder wood armoires that serve as storage pantries. Rust-colored striped fabric lines the armoires' windowed Win´dowed a. 1. Having windows or openings. doors, hiding what's inside while adding to the room's elegant look. Below the hood is a "pass-through" that allows the homeowners to keep an eye on to watch. - Shak. See also: Eye their young children in the adjacent playroom while the adults are preparing meals. Being of a size or scope that is greater than usual; unusually large or extensive: overscale furniture; an overscaled jacket. red-check accent pillows, and exposed turned legs, is the perfect foil to the room's otherwise subdued hues. "Every well-designed kitchen should be just as functional as it is beautiful," Kitchens said. To create the perfect "working triangle" in this room, the designer placed the refrigerator to the left of the island and set the apron-front sink perpendicular to the range. After the work is done, however, dining is equally important, so opposite the refrigerator is the casual dining area, containing a long rectangular wooden table with a leather banquette ban·quette n. 1. A platform lining a trench or parapet wall on which soldiers may stand when firing. 2. also ban·kit Southern Louisiana & East Texas A raised sidewalk: against the back wall. As our judges unanimously agreed, this room is indeed one of a kind--masterfully combining the Cokers' architectural sensibilities and flair for color with Kitchens' ability to create a room that's both practical and beautiful. BEST LIVING AREA The living area in Dr. and Mrs. David Segrest's new home in Madison combines large-scale luxury with a simple yet striking aesthetic design. Designer Michael Grogan of Jackson captured the essence of the homeowners' tastes and personalities with a room that underscores the home's architectural beauty. A wall of stone in various shapes and sizes first draws the eyes of visitors to this home; to complement this richly textured backdrop, Grogan hung a bold painting of green apples by Jackson artist (and designer's son) Patrick Grogan above the simple wood mantel. A niche to the left of the mantel provides a spot for the homeowners to showcase their cherished collectibles, including several pieces by Mississippi artist Bebe Wolfe. The artistry continues on a side table, where a colorful star box crafted by the designer himself serves as a striking conversation piece. Furnishings for this open space had to have a substantial presence but not overpower o·ver·pow·er tr.v. o·ver·pow·ered, o·ver·pow·er·ing, o·ver·pow·ers 1. When combined with the bold architecture of the space, Grogan's design touches give this room the inviting feeling of a sophisticated Southern lodge. BEST MASTER BEDROOM Classic French style combines with modern functionality in this bedroom to create a peaceful retreat from the outside world. Designer Charlotte Kidd of Hattiesburg started from scratch in this room in the old John Clark John Clark is the name of:

Bedside tables, faux-finished in an antiqued white shade, are topped by white marble lamps with braid-trimmed shades. A pair of antique Mississippi chairs bear a distressed whitewashed finish and new upholstery in the same pleasing tones of blue and slate. Since this room originally had no closet, a large mirrored French armoire serves that purpose. Centered between the room's two windows is a handpainted antique chest from Paris, providing more much-needed storage. A chandelier dripping with crystals is the room's crowning touch. Throughout this elegant space, Kidd shows a knack for mixing antique and modern elements to create a room that looks like it's evolved over time--a place anyone would like to call home. BEST DINING ROOM An antebellum plantation home in Ridgeland provided the perfect canvas for this artful dining room design by Gloria C. Jones of Jackson. The room's classic rectangular layout, large scale, and high ceilings offered "myriad opportunities to maximize a theme of traditional simplicity," Jones said. A palette of gold and green set the tone for the room's stately embellishments. Jones first brought the walls alive with a warm golden candlelight glaze, then added a glazed and rubbed trim with gilded gild 1 tr.v. gild·ed or gilt , gild·ing, gilds 1. Four Aubusson-inspired wall panels painted on aged canvas provide the perfect finishing touch. Fine antiques and estate pieces of English and French origin were chosen for the room's key furnishings. Jones chose rich silk fabrics for seating and window treatments, and a Bessarabian-derived needlepoint needlepoint: see lace. needlepoint Type of embroidery in which the stitches are counted and worked with a needle over the threads, or mesh, of a canvas foundation. It was known as canvas work until the early 19th century. rug provided a unifying element for the room's large wood pieces. Now complete, this room meets its modern-day potential for year-round entertaining, without compromising its traditional integrity. BEST BREAKFAST ROOM Southern charm is served up every day in this warm and vibrant breakfast area, designed by Cynthia Thomas of Madison. Heirloom china, rugs, and porcelains collected over the years by homeowners Bobbye and Darrell Jackson Darrell Lamont Jackson (born December 6, 1978 in Dayton, Ohio) is an American football wide receiver currently playing for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League. of Jackson were the inspiration for the room's design. The Jacksons wanted a space with a "warm country French feel" as well as a "sophisticated modern Southern charm," Thomas said. Thomas began by giving walls and cabinet backs a bright yellow facelift, which created a perfect backdrop for the homeowners' china. The blue and white pieces over the window add height while mimicking window treatments; white shutters can be pushed aside to allow uninterrupted views of the landscaped courtyard outside. Beadboard on the ceiling gives the area an unexpected touch of country charm and sets off the curvaceous cur·va·ceous adj. Having the curves of a full or voluptuous figure. cur·va ceous·ly adv. iron chandelier. The room is grounded by warm wood
furnishings and a chestnut-colored stone floor, set off by a traditional
wool rug in hues of red and navy. Provencal table linens and chair pads
add to the French country feeling but are easily changeable when the
homeowners desire a change of pace.
It seems the Jacksons have achieved their goal, for this room, with its graceful blend of French country and Southern hospitality, certainly charmed our judges! BEST KITCHEN Good design doesn't simply mean good looks--especially when it comes to kitchens. It's imperative that the space be well-planned so that there's plenty of room for preparing meals and enjoying casual time together as a family. When Jean Tonnar-Seale of Kitchen Kreators, Ltd. in Ridgeland first saw this kitchen in the Brandon home of Nancy and Bill Brintnall, she said it "suffered some major design flaws providing poor workspace." "Our objective was to improve quality and function while creating warmth and interest through finishes, the use of different wood species, and a variety of stone materials," Tonnar-Seale said. The designer's first area of concern was the cabinetry. Tonnar-Seale used contrasting cherry and maple woods with special door styles and accent hardware to create several focal points throughout the room. She designed an open china rack with arched glass doors above it to display a collection of blue and white china. On another wall, a hutch hutch 1. standard cagelike accommodation for rabbits. 2. light, movable cabin for calves or pigs; to provide shelter and warmth for animals at pasture. hutch burn cabinet with bun feet hides the microwave behind a pocket door. But the most eye-catching feature of this kitchen is the custom hood installed above the range. Its textured crimson finish, artfully applied by the homeowners, is complemented by a row of Florentine tiles and nutmeg cherry wood corbels. Below the hood, a backsplash back·splash n. An upright surface or border, as of tile, that protects the wall behind a sink or stove. of diagonally placed tumbled marble is accented with metal riles that repeat the rich brown tones of the furniture and flooring. A granite countertop that curves to form a roomy casual dining area completes the room's warm and inviting look. BEST BATHROOM Designer Becky Stubbs of Reflections of the Modern Garden in Meridian said she draws from "sentiment, context, lifestyle, landscape, and most of all, intuition" in her work. Stubbs' intuition was right on target in this elegant master bathroom, found in the rural Meridian home of Debra and John Anderson John Anderson may be: Science:
"One idea begets another," Stubbs said. "Often a whim becomes a solution." In this room, Stubbs' whims included personal touches that create a standout look. Fine silver and crystal accessories were the last elegant touch in this European-inspired room. "Just take a look at Sadie," Stubbs said, "just so happy to be a part of this Southern charm." And who wouldn't be? BEST CHILD'S BEDROOM When Brad and Jennifer Carpenter of Madison learned they were expecting a daughter, they knew just what they wanted for the baby's room--an elaborate fairy tale fairy tale Simple narrative typically of folk origin dealing with supernatural beings. Fairy tales may be written or told for the amusement of children or may have a more sophisticated narrative containing supernatural or obviously improbable events, scenes, and personages land fit for a princess. With the help of Sue Ellen Akers of Kidscapes Interiors in Pearl, the Pearl, The, one of four Middle English alliterative poems, all contained in a manuscript of c.1400, composed in the West Midland dialect, almost certainly by the same anonymous author, who flourished c.1370–1390. Carpenters found just what they desired, and newborn Aniston now sleeps in her very own fantasy land. Muted shades of lilac, rose, and moss green were used for a break from the pastels more typically found in babies' nurseries. The floors were painted in a harlequin pattern and finished with a glaze, while the ceiling was transformed into a night sky complete with twinkling "star" lights and winding branches. On the lilac walls, Akers painted faux stones to give the appearance of an old, weathered castle, along with a tiny mouse hole with two scampering mice a la Cinderella. In an inspired move, the room's closet was converted into a "sleeping nook," with a small winding staircase and columns. And a painted banner just inside the door welcomes visitors to "Princess Aniston's" domain. With details straight out of a story book, the little girl who lives inside this room may never want to grow up. BEST OUTDOOR SPACE One of designer Ann B. Cagle's most important--and most exhausting--projects to date was the design of her own home in Carson. After all the work was done, one of her biggest rewards was the luxury of being able to spend time on this simple yet elegant veranda, enjoying nature while relaxing in comfort. "I was out there so much that the hummingbirds became friendly, even to the point of drinking nectar while I was holding the feeder," Cagle said. The veranda soon became a favorite spot to read, birdwatch, and even nap. "In the winter, when our granddaughters spend the night with us, it has become a tradition to put on heavy robes in the morning and drink hot chocolate on the veranda--a memory that will last a lifetime for me." BEST FOYER The entry hall of this country home in Harrisville was designed by Rebecca Howell, ASID ASID American Society of Interior Designers ASID Address Space Identifier ASID Access, Searching, and Indexing of Directories ASID Advanced Secure Information Dissemination ASID Application Specific Integrated Device ASID Advanced System Integration Demonstration , of Madison to set the tone for the entire house. Howell stuck to classic details and traditional materials to achieve a look that is nothing short of timeless. With such an open space, homeowners Mr. and Mrs. Billy Sasser wanted the room to be striking yet classical, and to flow seamlessly into the adjacent dining room and study. To accomplish this, Howell said she knew that color would be a critical element of the area's design. She selected red damask wallcovering, which provided both intense color and a subtle texture. Classic architectural details, such as wide moldings and fluted Doric columns, were set against the deep red wallcovering to create a strong linear effect. The intricately carved marble-topped table, found at a Ridgeland antique mall, became the perfect focal point for the space. Above the table is an original landscape oil painting by Mississippi artist Rose Nowell. On the opposite wall is an oversized hail mirror that reflects both the table and artwork.
