2003 PREVIEW TRACK AND FIELD: YOUTHFUL APPROACH HIGHLAND TRACK TEAMS BOTH WITHOUT KEY SENIORS.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

PALMDALE - The economy is forcing cutbacks everywhere except on the Highland track and field team.

Again, the Bulldogs are treating their athletes to meets in Hawaii, Arizona and Tennessee. Highland even had a trip planned to Australia but decided not to leave the country in a time of war.

Highland also went to those three locations last year. But now a mostly new group will get to enjoy the experience.

The defending Golden League champion in boys, and second place in girls, Highland will be young this season. The boys' team especially was hit hard by graduation Graduation is the action of receiving or conferring an academic degree or the associated ceremony. The date of event is often called degree day. The event itself is also called commencement, convocation or invocation. , losing most of its sprinters, including top athlete Lawrence Cotton.

Highland does not return one league champion among the boys.

``We lost quite a bit,'' Highland coach Martin Prince said. ``We're starting out young, but it's a talented group. Still, we don't look to be as strong in the sprints.''

The boys look better in distance, where junior Andres Aguinaga is one of the top runners in the league. He is joined by newcomer Josh JOSH Joshua

``We probably have a better distance team than anyone in the league other than Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

,'' Aguinaga said. ``I think we'll be able to handle our own and make up for some of the points lost in sprints.''

Other Bulldogs who could advance in the postseason are hurdler Danny Leopold and thrower John Ikahihifo. Ikahihifo was above average last season in his first year throwing. Of course, that's the same story in another sport.

This season, he won the Golden League title and advanced to the state championships in wrestling wrestling, sport in which two unarmed opponents grapple with one another. The object is to secure a fall, i.e., cause the opponent to lose balance and fall to the floor, and ultimately to pin the supine opponent's shoulders to the floor, through the use of body .

``I'm looking to make a similar jump in throwing this year,'' Ikahihifo said. ``I haven't been hitting weights yet, but I'm going to get out there this week and try to get stronger.''

The girls' team also lost its two biggest point scorers with the graduation of jumper/sprinter Lizelle Jackson and distance runner distance runner

 Cassie Ramirez.

However, the girls have a more experienced group returning.

The distance team will be led by another Ramirez, Cassie's younger sister Danielle, who is now a senior and ready to move into her sister's spot.

``I have more experience now,'' Danielle said. ``I know more what I'm looking for Looking for

and what I can do. I don't really want to take over her role as much as make my own place for myself.''

Ramirez will have help from senior Ashley Cambaliza, an outstanding middle distance runner.

There is a young group of sprinters in sophomores Mika Hogains and Ayisha Noel, first-year junior Lindsey Blunt blunt (blunt) having a thick or dull edge or point; not sharp.  and junior Kara Kara (kär`ə), river, c.140 mi (230 km) long, NE European and NW Siberian Russia. However, the rest of the field events lack depth and standouts.

The girls only lost to Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill by one point last season and could challenge again as the Rebels also lost some key athletes.

we lost,'' Prince said. ``I wouldn't think we would be the league favorite this year. I'd look for Antelope Valley in the boys and Quartz Hill for the girls.''
