2003 PREVIEW TRACK AND FIELD: STREAK SEEMS SECURE BEHIND STAR DUO, CANYON GIRLS AGAIN EXPECTED TO BE UNBEATABLE.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

Sixty remains a magical number at Canyon High. The girls' track and field team has won 60 consecutive dual meets over the past eight seasons.

The streak has gone through two generations of Canyon competitors, and there is no indication it will stop this year.

With the versatile and dangerous duo of Alysia Johnson and Alisha Thompson only juniors, it looks as though Canyon's opponents will have to wait at least another two seasons before having a shot at beating the Cowboys.

``In my 20 years of coaching, I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

if I've ever coached two girls as versatile as these girls,'' co-coach Dave DeLong said.

Johnson, who never has lost an event in a dual meet, already holds seven school records. She is the two-time defending Southern Section champion in the 800 meters but can compete in virtually any event in which Canyon needs points.

``Keeping the streak going feels good,'' Johnson said. ``We don't really discuss the streak. But, of course, we are aware of it and want to keep it going. Hopefully it will continue after we leave.''

Johnson's only shortcomings A shortcoming is a character flaw.

Last season, the 2001 fall was difficult to overcome mentally and affected her running early. DeLong doesn't think that will be a problem this year.

If Johnson has a slow start this season, it will be because she was on the Canyon soccer team that went deep into the playoffs.

``I think she's past that stage, feeling like she's carrying the weight of the world,'' DeLong said. ``She enjoys running and doesn't worry about that stuff anymore. It's always a problem for a star athlete who has huge expectations, but I think she's matured in that area.''

Thompson specializes in the hurdles but also does the triple jump, high jump and sprints. After bursting onto the scene as a freshman, her sophomore year was a little disappointing.

``She had a bit of a sophomore funk,'' DeLong said. ``She questioned how hard she wanted to work and if it was all worth it. But she's made a real commitment to improve this year. She's already a lot better than last year.''

The girls will be strong in field events. Canyon has a history of dominating the pole vault pole vault
