Johnstone, who finished second in the league in cross country, is one reason the team is looking up. Canyon is always the class of the league in distances. However, with Johnstone and sophomore Hannah Frick - who won the junior varsity junior varsity

The girls finished fourth in the league last season. But improved distances combined with a strong group in field events should push them higher.

Katie Bedre, a junior, won the league title in the discus discus /dis·cus/ (dis´kus) pl. dis´ci   [L.] disk.

Moore also might help out in the sprints, where Saugus doesn't have an experienced standout. Sophomores Madison Moore (no relation to Lauren) and Jessica Oliver will do their part.

Those sophomores are some of many Centurions who ran on varsity last year as freshmen, gaining valuable experience.

``I feel pretty good all around for the girls,'' Standley said. ``I think they have a lot of very good athletes. As of yet, I can't see anyone being a superstar, but we have a lot of quality depth. That will be their strength.''

The boys finished third last season but graduated some elite competitors, including Ryan Davis, who went to state in the shot put, and Tyler Galloway, who was the only runner who could get points against the top distance programs in the league.

But the Centurions have the young talent to match last year's performance.

, a junior, is in his first season on varsity. However, his time to win the junior-varsity title in the 800 last year would have won the varsity title the same day. Standley calls him the best athlete on the team and a guy he wishes could do six events.

``Were not as strong as last year in terms of seniors,'' Hartshorn said. ``But I think we're pretty strong overall. Canyon is a team we look up to. I think we have a good chance against them this year because we have a push to excel and be known more for our athletics.''

Sprinter Nick Allevato could have the best chance to advance far into the postseason. He is pushing 11 seconds flat in the 100 meters.
