2003 PREVIEW TRACK AND FIELD: QUARTZ HILL GIRLS START MINUS STAR BOYS' TEAM, MEANWHILE, CAN ONLY GET BETTER IN '03.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill High went undefeated in girls' track and field in 2002 but suffered a devastating dev·as·tate

loss before this season even started.

Top athlete Alexis Crimes transferred to Etiwanda after her father moved into that school's area for work. Crimes was worth 20 points in most meets, running the sprints and relays.

A decent team returns without her but one lacking the standout athlete to put the team over the top. In a Golden League where Quartz Hill has come down to the final event of the meet the past two seasons against Highland, that could make all the difference.

``Losing Alexis will hurt,'' first-year coach James Hardy James Hardy may refer to:

said. ``We got a lot of points from her. She placed first in the majority of her races. Finding a way to make up for those lost points will be key.''

Hardy hopes to get the majority of those points made up from field events. Quartz Hill has an experienced field group led by Whitney Rasmussen, a junior who finished second in league last year in the high jump.

The Rebels surround Rasmussen with a solid girl in nearly every area. There is junior pole vaulter Christin Shelby, junior long jumper The simplest form of an on/off switch. ``Field events will hopefully be our strength, as they were last year,'' Hardy said. ``We will need to ask more from that group this season.''

``If the young sprinters can do well, we'll be able to compete,'' Hardy said. ``I think they will both do well once they get some competition under their belts.''

Quartz Hill lacks depth in distance events but can rely on defending league champion Tarah Novelli in the 3,200 meters.

The boys' team was the exact opposite of the girls' team last year, going winless.

But things are looking up for the boys. The team dominated by freshman and sophomores last season now has seasoned sophomore and juniors.

Plus, an unexpected infusion of seniors is expected to give a boost. Sprinters Brendan Borrelle and Lawrence Dantzler are seniors but newcomers to track who will run the short sprints. Dantzler is from the basketball team.

``A lot of the top athletes at the school haven't been coming out for track,'' first-year boys' coach Ron Hamilton said. ``Four seniors who hadn't been on the team before came out this year and are saying they wish they came out earlier. Hopefully, they are getting that message out to the lower grades and we can start building more-seasoned athletes.''

in the 400 meters with sophomore Alex Henderson and senior Ben Gocke, who is back on the team after sitting out as a junior.

The boy who has the potential to advance furthest in the postseason is junior thrower Nick Saylor. Saylor struggled because of a shoulder injury toward the end of last season. But he has already thrown a personal record 48-10 in the shot put at the Antelope Valley Invitational.

The distance team is trying to recover from a cross country scandal in which five runners were kicked off the team and coach Robert Martin Robert J. Juniors Juan Mendez and Joel Hood lead a distance group that could be competitive.

``It seems most events are progressing pretty quickly except the distances,'' Hood said. ``I believe some people aren't over all that yet. I think we can do well once people start getting along.''
