2003 PREVIEW BOYS' GOLF: SAUGUS NOT ONLY IMPROVED ONE.

Byline: Dave Shelburne Shelburne, town (1990 pop. 5,871) in Chittenden co., NW Vermont, 7 mi (11 km) S of Burlington on the banks of Lake Champlain. A popular resort, Shelburne is also a center for local lumber and dairy industries.  Staff Writer

The good news for Saugus Saugus (sô`gəs), town (1990 pop. 25,549), Essex co., NE Mass., a suburb of Boston on the Saugus River near the Atlantic Ocean; settled before 1637, set off from Lynn and inc. 1815. Mainly residential, the town has some light manufacturing.  High boys' golf fans is the Centurions could have one of their better teams this year.

The other news: The rest of their area rivals also are better, as shown in last week's season-opening Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Preview at Robinson Ranch ranch, large farm devoted chiefly to raising and breeding cattle, horses, sheep, and goats.  Keith and long-hitting teammate Wes Silvestri both shot 85 in that four-team competition, and the Centurions finished 12 strokes better than last season.

``And still we came in fourth,'' said Saugus coach David Stradling, whose team finished behind winner Hart, defending Foothill League champion Valencia and Canyon in the annual kickoff match for the four area Foothill teams.

``I went back 10 years in researching, and our score would have beaten all but two of our past scores,'' Stradling said. ``We're better, but so is everyone else. Our league is so much better.''

Canyon for the league's third-place berth in the Southern Section playoffs.

Stradling concedes the top two spots will belong, again, to Valencia - which reached the Southern Section final last season - and Hart, which won every league title during the 1990s.

The Saugus push was expected to be led by Keith, a consistent senior with an excellent short game. He has been the Centurions' No. 1 player for three years, averaging three strokes over par last season to earn all-league recognition. But Silvestri, a junior who drives the ball 310 yards, also is playing well early. He had back-to-back medalist rounds of 73 and 72 last week at Rancho ran·cho

``One over par in a howling wind is a great score,'' Stradling said. ``He's a great competitor.''

Mike Weiss, Tim Kreuzberger, Paul Chung, Curtis Anaya, Marc Pepitone and Steven Mayeda also have started for Saugus this season.

``Our top four players are pretty solid,'' Stradling said. ``We just need to be more consistent.''
