It held its first race in Daytona Beach, Fla.  Most Popular Driver Award officially opens tomorrow with the launch of www.mostpopulardriver.com. But the site will be missing something. Sixteen-time winner Bill Elliott's name isn't on the ballot. With Elliott out and the Web site available tomorrow, fans should prepare to vote because the 2003 Most Popular Drive Award is anyone's race.

At a press conference Wednesday, Bill Elliott announced that he is removing his name from the ballot for the 2003 season. Last year, a record 3.3 million votes were cast by thousands of fans, shattering all voting totals posted in previous years.

The Most Popular Driver Award dates back to 1956. It began as a simple poll of the drivers and grew to incorporate all NASCAR Winston Cup competitors. Later, it included all NASCAR members. Today, it's a prestigious award voted on by racing fans nationwide. Through the years, voters' choices have ranged from the obvious to the surprising. The only driver close to matching Elliott's 16 most popular wins is Richard Petty Richard Lee Petty (born July 2, 1937) is a former NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver. "The King," as he is nicknamed, is most well-known for winning the NASCAR Championship seven times (Dale Earnhardt is the only other driver to accomplish this feat),winning a record 200 races , who's won nine times. Other past winners have included such notables as Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip.
