2003: Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.Hatching Run barefoot over the dunes to the other side, where their eyes cannot follow. Taste the dune grass underfoot, so dry and sharp against the throat. Let the seam between water and shore lick the toes. Above the watch of the sea, weave between the wind-warped fences that mark the place where gulls lay their eggs. So we can ignore my aunt and her daughter because they don't exist on our family tree. My grandmother had only three children, all of them sons. I was the firstborn first·born adj. First in order of birth; born first. n. The child in a family who is born first. Noun 1. firstborn - the offspring who came first in the order of birth eldest in our family. The doctors were not allowed to tell my mother if I was a boy or girl. The Chinese government had passed a law limiting most families to one child. In the remote countryside, where government officials and hospitals were scarce, many newborns ended up at the bottom of a river, wrapped in blankets that doubled as funeral shrouds. Those babies were always female. So doctors stopped telling prospective mothers the baby's gender. When I turned out to be a girl, my grandmother was furious. Her oldest son, a prestigious Ph.D. from Tsinghua (the most prominent university in the country), the pride and joy of her life, was stuck with a daughter. A girl could only do housework, get married, and bear sons for another family. As far as my grandmother was concerned, I would be a waste of time and money. But my mother didn't give up on me. Maybe because she was from the south, where people didn't believe girls were quite as useless as Manchurians did. She spent every spare moment teaching me everything she could, from music theory to arithmetic. Maybe she wanted to prove that not all girls were worthless. When I turned 7, my family moved to America. I left behind the grandparents grandparents npl → abuelos mpl grandparents grand npl → grands-parents mpl grandparents grand npl , aunts, and uncles who had never really cared much about me. But I continued to work and study as if my life depended on it. I needed to prove to the world that I was better than any son my parents might have had. I needed to show that I was worthy of other people's love, just as I had proved that I was worthy of my family's. Lisa Wang, 15 Lynbrook High School

Day One You're in the kitchen baking cookies: Just mix the butter and flour together (she's flirting) and I can hear your voice, but not your words. I'm under my sheets in weekend-old clothing trying to turn myself into Novocain. Whose shoes are these? You're talking about my new ones, discarded, mud-coated, on the couch. You say we need to clean up after ourselves, but you can't see the mess you've left us treading in waist-deep. Elysha Krupp, 17 The Park School Brooklandville, Maryland Daydream I've been thinking about your stay at the hospital. I've thought of it down to the heaviness of wool blankets, down to the sibilant sounds echoing through the hallway, but I still can't decide why, exactly, you're here. Either an elevator accident from which I rescue you, heroically, or something internal--a potato-shaped melancholy growing stoutly in your stomach. Whatever it is that has brought us to this bedside, your eyes are like cupped hands filled with oil, and they hurtle me into a place where neither of us exists. I take a snapshot in this windless cosmos before I understand that you won't read this poem, that you won't go to any hospital, and that I will not save you from anything that can be named.
