The intent of the performance competitions sponsored by Music Teachers National Association is to encourage exceptionally talented young artists in the pursuit of musical excellence and to recognize outstanding achievement in the music teaching profession.

* There is no longer a Teacher Entry Fee for MTNA members.

* Repertoire Repertoire may mean Repertory but may also refer to:

The MTNA Student Competitions consist of three levels: state competition, division competition, national finals.

The application deadline for all states is September September: see month.  9, 2002. All mailed applications must be postmarked or time/date stamped on or before September 9, 2002. Applications postmarked after the deadline will not be accepted.

Teacher Eligibility

* Teachers may enter in competitions only students who are currently studying that instrument, voice or composition with them.

Nonmember Teachers

* Nonmembers have the option of becoming a member of MTNA or paying a Teacher Entry Fee of $150. This fee will allow the teacher to enter one or more students into the various MTNA competitions, provided all other eligibility requirements are met.

Residency A duration of stay required by state and local laws that entitles a person to the legal protection and benefits provided by applicable statutes.

States have required state residency for a variety of rights, including the right to vote, the right to run for public office, the

* Failure to appear in the scheduled winners' concert will make the winner and the winner's teacher/coach ineligible for any awards, honors or recognition pertaining to the competition.

Competition Rules

* In the performance competitions, teachers or coaches may not assist their students as accompanists, with tuning, equipment setup See BIOS setup and install program.  or turning pages for the student or the accompanist at any level of the competition for either competition or concert performance.

* The use of metronomes, electronic tuners An Electronic tuner is a device used by musicians to tune instruments. * Entrant-composed cadenzas in manuscript format Manuscript format is the format in which most editors prefer to receive writers' submittals of text manuscripts for publication. Even with the advent of desktop publishing, making it possible for even an amateur to prepare text that appears typeset, most publishers still require : Entrant-composed cadenzas may be used at any level of the competition. Choice of this option must be indicated on the original application form.

* Published cadenzas and those still in manuscript format that are not composed by the entrant are acceptable at any level of the MTNA competitions.

* Entrants may be accompanied by anyone other than the teacher or coach at all levels of the competition for any event pertaining to the competition.

* Taped accompaniments are not permitted.

MTNA Official Accompanists

* Official accompanist fees are nonrefundable.

* Entrants who request an official accompanist for the next level of the competition must give a check for official accompanist fees to the state/division competition coordinator before leaving the competition site. Requests for official accompanists cannot be granted if this procedure is not followed.

* Checks for official accompanist fees must be made payable to MTNA and should be appropriately marked as "division" or "national" official accompanist fee.

* Total rehearsal re·hears·al

 time with division and national accompanists is outlined below. In some cases, the total amount of rehearsal time may be divided into two separate rehearsals.

* The music for each work to be performed with the official accompanist must be postmarked to the division competitions chair/national competitions coordinator at least six (6) weeks before the date of the division/national competition. A list of division competitions coordinators is available online at www.mtna.org.

* $50 for forty-five (45) minutes of rehearsal and competition performance.

High School Competition Official Accompanist Fees

* Major work only: $40 for thirty (30) minutes of rehearsal and competition performance.

* Complete program: $100 for sixty (60) minutes of rehearsal and competition performance.

* High School Voice: $65 for forty (40) minutes of rehearsal and competition performance.

Collegiate Artist Competition Official Accompanist Fees

* Major work only: $75 for sixty (60) minutes of rehearsal and competition performance.

* Complete program: $125 for one-hundred-twenty (120) minutes of rehearsal and competition performance.

National Competition

Junior High Competition Official Accompanist Fees

* $65 for forty-five (45) minutes of rehearsal and competition performance.

High School Competition Official Accompanist Fees

* Major work only: $50 for thirty (30) minutes of rehearsal and competition performance.

Competition Agreement

* It is the responsibility of the teacher, coach, entrant and parent or guardian to abide by all rules and regulations for the MTNA Student Competitions. Failure to meet this responsibility will result in the disqualification dis·qual·i·fi·ca·tion

COMPETITION REPERTOIRE PROGRAMS

Competition repertoire programs must be typed on 8.5"x 11" paper and
attached to the Official Application Form. Those entering online
should complete the appropriate section on the online repertoire form.

competition repertoire must be listed in chronological order concluding

title and number of each work and movement, tempo markings, the

* The ensemble may not be assisted by their teacher and/or coach in equipment setup, turning pages or tuning at any level of the competition or concert performance.

Repertoire Requirements

* To demonstrate contrasting styles, repertoire must include at least two (2) works composed during at least two (2) of the following time periods: baroque, classic, romantic, impressionistic, contemporary.

* Once the above requirements have been met, additional significant representative selections may be submitted if desired to complete the recital program.

* Arrangements may be used, but they may not be simplifications of compositions written for the same instrumentation. They are expected to be in the style and will be considered in the historical style classification of the original composer.

* Cuts in the music are not permitted. Repeats are left to the discretion of the ensemble.

* Entrants may program more music than the allotted maximum performance time. There is no minimum time.

* The competition repertoire program must be typed on 8.5" x 11" paper and attached to the Official Application Form. The ensemble's name, type of ensemble (String Quartet, Piano Trio A piano trio is a group of piano and two other instruments, usually a violin and a cello, or a piece of music written for such a group. It is one of the most common forms found in classical chamber music. , and so on) and the state in which the ensemble will be competing should be included at the top of the program. COMPETITION REPERTOIRE PROGRAMS

Competition repertoire programs must be typed on 8.5"x 11" paper and
attached to the Official Application Form. Those entering online should
complete the appropriate section on the online repertoire form. The
name of the ensemble, each entrant's name and instrument and state in
which the ensemble will be competing should be included at the top of
the program. Competition programs must list required competition
repertoire in chronological order concluding with additional
repertoire, if any. Programs must include all appropriate information
for each work listed: the title and number of each work and movement,
tempo markings, the performance time for each work and each individual
movement within works, the composer's full name (and arranger if
applicable) and historical style period. Refer to the Composer

Performance Requirements

* The composition of each National Composition Competition winner will be performed at the 2003 MTNA National Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. Winners must provide their own musicians and must be present at the performance.

* Winning compositions must be performed at the national conference on the instruments for which the composition was written.

* Teachers may perform a student's composition at any level.

* For compositions using unusual instruments and for compositions for large ensembles (6 or more performers), the use of a videotaped performance at the national conference is permitted.

* Performance parts are required for performances at the state, division and national concerts, but do not need to be submitted with the original application materials.

Competition Rules

* Entrants must have prepared the composition with the teacher listed on their Official Application Form.

* The entrant is responsible for all financial obligations at any level of the competitions.

* Adjudicators have the prerogative to declare "no winner" if there is only one entrant in a competition category.

* A copy of the score and recording of each national winner will be kept by MTNA.

* MTNA is not responsible for lost or damaged manuscripts, parts or recordings.

* MTNA recommends that students below the age of 18 be accompanied by an adult at all levels of the competitions. MTNA will exercise all reasonable caution to provide a safe environment for all entrants but cannot guarantee the safety of all entrants.
