After all, he was not the school's first, or even second choice to succeed Paul Hackett. However, Carroll has made doubters into believers.

Carrol wasn't the only person to quell the naysayers. USC quarterback Carson Palmer was highly-touted as a freshman in 1998. But it wasn't until this season that Palmer developed into the player most thought he would be when he played at Orange County's Santa Margarita High.

This season, Palmer completed 288 of 458 passes for 3,639 yards and 32 touchdowns, while throwing just 10 interceptions. Standout receiver Mike Williams, only a freshman, caught 75 passes, 13 for touchdowns.

On the defensive side, USC led the Pac-10 in total defense.
