2002 PREVIEW VOLLEYBALL: FOR A.V. HIGH GIRLS, ONLY WAY TO GO IS UP YOUNG ANTELOPES LOOK TO CLIMB OUT OF LEAGUE CELLAR.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
High girls' volleyball coach Cynthia Grimes Grimes is a surname, that is believed to be of a Scandinavian decent and may refer to

  • Ashley Grimes
  • Barbara Grimes, a Chicago murder victim
  • Burleigh Grimes (1893–1985), US baseball player
  • Camryn Grimes

concedes the Antelopes will be young this year. The roster is filled with underclassmen, some of whom are making their varsity debuts.

It's the sort of thing most coaches lie awake Verb 1. lie awake - lie without sleeping; "She was so worried, she lay awake all night long"

 about.

But the age factor isn't a concern to Grimes.

``I'm not worried about our experience,'' Grimes said. ``We have some young players, but they have ability and talent, so I think it's only a matter of time before the experience part comes around.''

Not that Grimes doesn't have some apprehensions heading into the new year. Antelope Valley is hoping to improve on its last-place finish in the Golden League a year ago, and with so many new players being counted on to provide critical contributions, she worries how long it will take the newcomers and the returners to forge a successful blend.

``We need to get to a point where we can jell jell

and compete as a unit,'' Grimes said. ``Our age isn't a concern. But getting in sync, that might take a little time.''

It also doesn't help that the Antelopes will be without outside hitter Amber Mark, who is still recovering from a serious leg injury and likely won't be available at the beginning of the year. Elwell, a solid player with varsity experience, has not practiced yet this year.

``It hurts because she's someone we can depend on, especially in terms of her knowledge and experience,'' Grimes said.

The Antelopes should be in good shape in the middle, with senior Suma SUMA Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (Canada)
SUMA Humanitarian Supply Management System (WHO)
Elwell and sophomore Marilyn Elder the expected starters.

Elwell is a two-year varsity starter who brings savvy and leadership. Elder, who played on the varsity team In the United States and Canada and UK, varsity sports teams are the principal athletic teams representing a college, university, or high school or other secondary school. Such teams compete against the principal athletic teams at other colleges/universities, or in the case of  last year as a freshman, has improved considerably over the offseason.

Grimes knew it was a risk inserting Elder in the starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .

certain to come. But the potential payoff was too much to pass up on.

``The potential was there, just as it was for (Elwell) when she was a sophomore,'' Grimes said. ``And just as (Elwell) has continued to mature and develop as a player, I see the same thing with (Elder), and that makes it well worth the investment.''

Defensively, Grimes is counting on senior Amber Martin and freshman Caja Garcia.

Although only a ninth-grader, Garcia has shown enough special qualities to earn a spot on the varsity team, using her hustle and tenacity to impress Grimes.

``Actually she reminds me quite a bit of myself at that age,'' Grimes said. ``She's a hard worker and a quick study. All she needs now is experience.''

At outside hitter, hard-hitting sophomore Ashley Vandiver could develop into a standout.

``She can really hit the ball,'' Grimes said. ``She needs to improve her blocking, but that's just a matter of time.''

Courtney Sidener will also see time at outside hitter.

The Antelopes will use two different setters, with sophomore Lisa Hatlan and sophomore Marilyn Green.

``As far as our potential, I'm confident we have the work ethic work ethic

to eventually develop into the team we're capable of being,'' Grimes said. ``I truly believe once we get in sync and mature into a confident unit, we will be fine.''
