2002 PREVIEW GIRLS' TENNIS: COMPETITION INTENSE FOR HART ROSTER SPOTS.

Byline: Lauren Gustus Staff Writer

The first few days of practice usually are a little nerve-wracking. And this year, members of Hart High's girls' tennis team are looking forward to a Groundhog groundhog: see woodchuck.  Day-type of season, as they will have to prove daily they deserve a top roster spot.

Coach Steve Love will draw on almost 25 years of experience as he tries to squeeze five players into three singles spots. Love figures he will get the best results if he can successfully manipulate manipulate

``I've got five solid players and there's a good chance that all of them will see some action this season,'' Love said. ``I could put a lineup on the court right now, but we'll just have to wait and see.''

Love, who has coached girls' tennis at Hart for 21 years, said this will be one of the toughest seasons for him to pick his starters. In the past, his lineup was more defined at the start of school. ``This year our team is absolutely full,'' said Taylor, a senior who played singles last season. ``In the past couple of years, there haven't been that many serious players on our team. This year we're going to have to work really hard to keep a spot.''

As of last week, before practice began, Love thought Jacobs, a junior, would be at No. 1 singles. At 5-foot-11 and with a strong upper body, Jacobs hits big serves and baseline The horizontal line to which the bottoms of lowercase characters (without descenders) are aligned. See typeface.

Jacobs doesn't see competition for the top three spots as a cause for tension.

``I think we're going to settle in to who's going to be one, two and three,'' Jacobs said.

Jacobs was 18-12 as a sophomore in the Foothill League last year. She placed second in the Valencia tournament and third in the Palmdale tournament.

``Sara is basically our steady baseline performer,'' Love said.

With school starting a week early in the Hart District, fall sports picked up a few extra minutes out on the courts and playing fields during seventh period, but athletes lost the extra week to prepare for the season by themselves. Jacobs doesn't see the early start as a problem.

``It would be nice to have that week,'' she said. ``But we'll probably be fine.''

Over the summer, Jacobs worked out with Davidson, a junior, and also went to tennis camp.

Love said he was pleased with Hart's overall skill level last year during spring workouts, and he hoped his team practiced over the summer to be ready to go Aug. 19.

``We're going to be in the top three,'' she said. ``I guess it will be close, but probably we'll end up in the top three.''
