2002 PREVIEW CROSS COUNTRY: PREPARING TO MAKE RUN FOR IT DESERT CHRISTIAN GIRLS, PARACLETE AMONG BEST.

Byline: Julio Cortez Staff Writer

With a team full of underclassmen, Paraclete High cross country coach Mike Fluharty could call this a rebuilding year.

However, he is not.

``We are a very young team with a lot of potential,'' said Fluharty, who is in his second year coaching the team. ``It's going to be interesting. Last year was our rebuilding year, more or less. We didn't have the talent level that we have this year.''

Sophomore Heidi Rocha finished second in Alpha League last year. She looks to be the team leader this season after taking a cross country course this summer at Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA.  coach Dean Spoelstra, Desert Christian's list of achievements includes 11 consecutive league championships, with an expected 2002 Desert Mountain League title making it an even dozen in a row.

The Knights have won two Southern Section Division V championships, in 1997 and 2001. They are regular visitors to Fresno for the CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF).  State Championships, having qualified every year since 1997 and placing third in California twice in that span.

Spoelstra's roster for the fall will total almost 40 of a school of 300 students.

Senior Claytonia Tarazi, whom Spoelstra said has worked hard throughout the summer, is the team's clear-cut No. 1.

``I had to say now, if someone is to get her (in a race), I'd be very excited. And I know Clay would be happy with that,'' Spoelstra said. ``But Clay is our senior leader. She's a wonderful girl. She's very committed to the program. She doesn't play any other sports and is involved in the Drama Club on campus. But this is her one sport.''

Several juniors should be right behind Tarazi, including her sister Nadia, the coach's daughter Amy Spoelstra, Erin Rees and Ashley Hoderland. They figure to be equal in their times.

Vasquez: When the husband-and-wife tandem (Tandem Computers Inc., Cupertino, CA) A former major manufacturer of fault-tolerant computers founded in 1974 by James Treybig and provider of the early 21st century technology for HP's enterprise computing strategy.  of Grant and Tessa Moore agreed at almost literally the last minute to coach the 2001 Vasquez cross country teams, they had at least two definite runners. Their children.

Son Grant was a senior runner for the boys and daughter Shawnee was to join the girls' team. Beyond the Moore family, there weren't many others willing to represent the Mustangs.

Shawnee Moore not only was the Mustangs' best performer but helped her parents bring in some enthusiastic team members. The Moores posted fliers around campus and Shawnee, just as her brother did, spread the word.

``We had five girls and two boys on the (original team),'' Grant Moore said.

By the end of the year, there were nine girls and eight boys signed up. Word has spread, and the Mustangs now have a respectable field of runners: 13 boys and 12 girls. Cross country is a popular sport on the Acton campus.

Key returnees to the girls' team are Elise Macias (senior) and Kim Starr (sophomore). Top newcomers include Brooke De Avila (freshman); Elizabeth Ortiz (freshman) and Deidra Sergey (junior).

He said he had the best turnout for the first day of workouts in years.

He was particularly happy with the boys' team having four returnees from last season, when the team finished third in the High Desert League.

Bishop figured senior Kevin Cappello, who has been with the team since his freshman year, will fill the No. 1 spot.

However, Cappello will be fighting for the lead with Sean Jungers, a junior who had an impact on both the cross country and track-and-field teams last year. Jungers had an unusual two-event combination in track, running the 1-mile race and hurdle HURDLE, Eng. law. A species of sledge, used to draw traitors to execution.  races.

With most of his worries lifted with the turnout for the boys' team, Bishop is concentrating on his biggest problem: keeping girls on the team. Last year, the team began the season with five runners but finished with none.

Elizabeth Verde, who ran some races last year, was out at practice this week.

``I am not sure if it's the heat out here, but Lancaster has heat too,'' Bishop said. ``For some reason we always have trouble keeping the girls on the team for a full season.''

Rosamond: The team began official practice this week but, after two days of workouts, first-year coach Jennifer Housholder was trying to figure how things run.

Housholder, who was the long-distance coach of the track-and-field team at Desert the past three years, just finished her duties with the Air Force and was hired last week at Rosamond to teach mathematics. She also was offered the cross country coaching job because of her experience with the sport.

She said her goal this season is to give the runners confidence.

``I had eight to 10 kids that are signed up for the team,'' Housholder said. ``But I think there will be more of the ninth-graders who will come out to practice once school starts next week ... I still have to get things straight because I am brand new to the school and brand new to the team.''
