2002 National Conference highlights.


The 2002 National Conference was an inspiring success! International representation increased from five countries in 1997 to seven countries this year, including Greece, Canada, Philippines, Russia, and Italy -- to name a few! Nearly two hundred volunteers helped to make the conference run smoothly for the more than one thousand conference participants who convened at the Omni Shoreham Hotel The Shoreham Hotel is a hotel in Northwest Washington, D.C., owned by Omni Hotels. It is located at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and Calvert Street. Built in 1930, the building was designed by Waddy Butler Wood. , which is centrally located in Washington, D.C., and near major landmarks, including the national zoo. Camp professionals gathered to network with colleagues, participate in over one hundred educational sessions, and browse the exhibit hail.

The theme, "Leadership is a Capital Idea," pervaded the conference as keynote speakers, Marcia Bullard, Dr. Lynn Ponton, and Robert K. Goodwin Robert Kingman Goodwin (May 23, 1905 - February 21, 1983) was a U.S. Representative from Iowa.

Born in Des Moines, Iowa, Goodwin attended the public schools. He was graduated from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, in 1928 and later attended the law school of George
, discussed topics from adolescent risk-taking and improving the quality of life for the nation's children to making a difference in today's society. Opportunities abounded for conference attendees to share legislative concerns with senators and representatives.
