Delegation [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] More than 370 multifamily professionals convened in March to network, learn more about industry issues and meet face-to-face with their federal legislators. They returned home with new contacts and a greater sense of control over legislation and pending regulations that affect the industry. Each year, the National Apartment Association (NAA NAA Nomina Anatomica Avium. ) hosts a Capitol Capitol, seat of the U.S. Congress Capitol, seat of the U.S. government at Washington, D.C. Conference for its members, enabling them to bring to Capitol Hill a unified message about key issues affecting the multifamily housing industry. This year's conference was considered the most successful ever. "The impact is that you participate in an issues briefing and you're updated on issues that you wouldn't possibly know about otherwise," said 2002 Legislative Committee Chair and NAA Region VI Vice President Brad Williams
Brad Andrew Williams (born 20 November 1974 in Frankston, Victoria) is an Australian cricketer. , CPM (1) (Critical Path Method) A project management planning and control technique implemented on computers. You don't get those opportunities anywhere else." 2002 NAA Association Executives Council President Nathan Slovin agreed. "The Capitol Conference is excellent because the people who attend are the people in leadership positions," he said. "Wherever you go, you're dealing with the highest leadership, and that's very exciting." One of the best things about this year's conference was that nearly 70 of the attendees were making their first trip to advocate in Washington. During the four-day conference, members attended NAA committee meetings, a Government Affairs Roundtable, and an Issues Briefing, all culminating with NAA's day on Capitol Hill, when members were given the opportunity to share their views on NAA's Legislative Priorities and other important issues with key congressional leaders on Capitol Hill. Prior to the Capitol Conference, NAA/ National Multi Homing Council (NMHC NMHC National Multi Housing Council NMHC Non-Methane Hydrocarbons NMHC National Modular Housing Council ) distribute a brochure that covers the 2002 Legislative and Regulatory Priorities. These priorities, prepared by the NAA/NMHC Joint Legislative Staff, inform members about the issues under consideration this year by Congress. The priorities include NAA/NMHC's position on current topics such as property and asset management, finance, tax policy, the environment and building codes. Data on the u.S. apartment market also is included. The brochure includes NAA/NMHC's position, background and recent legislation for each topic. It gave attendees an in-depth understanding of the issues and any recent action that has occurred. (For a copy of the 2002 NAA/NMHC priorities visit www.naahq.org/government/2002prioritiesbooklet.pdf). The conference also included meetings of NAA's Committees, Board of Directors and Assembly of Delegates, which met to discuss current tasks affecting NAA and the multifamily housing industry. Socializing and Networking During the Capitol Conference attendees enjoyed opportunities to network and laugh at the opening reception followed by a performance by the Capitol Steps, a well-known troupe, specializing in political satire Political satire is a subgenre of general satire that specializes in gaining entertainment from politics, politicians, and public affairs. Attendees enjoyed exploring the museum's 33 rooms of colonial decor, and fans of The West Wing took advantage of the opportunity to explore one of the show's most popular sets. The NAA PAC is a powerful tool in our lobbying efforts. It allows our NAA/NMHC lobbyists to demonstrate that our members not only believe in our issues, but also are committed to proactively pursuing a common agenda. Government Affairs Roundtable Always a popular event, the Government Affairs Roundtable examined ways in which several cities address crisis situations in the shadow of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Panelists included: Cathy Atkins, Program Principal with the National Conference of State Legislatures The abbreviation NCSL redirects here. The guidebook was studied by NAA/ NMHC, which filed several objections to its language and provisions. The two groups also outlined several positive sections of the book. Attendees learned how the Guidebook will be used by planning advocates and how it will affect their future development plans if passed. Conrad Egan, Executive Director of the Millennial Housing Commission The Millennial Housing Commission was created by Congress in 2000 as part of the FY 2000 Appropriations legislation. He said the key policy recommendations are likely to include a wide range of issues that are aimed to improve the supply of affordable housing, particularly rental housing. He commented on the very extensive and helpful submission of materials by NAA/NMHC. Preparing for Capitol Hill Visits Each year, Capitol Conference attendees say that, without question, their visit to Capitol Hill is invaluable. Meeting in-person with legislators and their top aides is the best way to ensure that the industry's concerns are heard. Before heading to Capitol Hill, 2002 NAA President Scott Gardner Scott Gardner (born April 1 1988) is a young English footballer who was born in Luxembourg and despite being a natural right winger[1], plays as a right back for Leeds United. He has played for the England national team at Under-16 and 17 age groups. , Crosshaven Properties, welcomed new attendees to the First Timers' Orientation. Gardner emphasized the importance of developing relationships with congressman from your home state and let attendees know what an impact Capitol Hill visits can have. A famous riddle was asked by the Sphinx: "What goes on four legs in the morning, on two at noon, on three at night?" Oedipus guessed the , NAA/NMHC Senior Vice President, spoke about the background of the legislative process and addressed concerns of first timers about Capitol Hill visits. "These are legislators who are making business decisions affecting our members," said Barbara Vassallo, NAA Director of State & Local Policy. "They must be educated about our business. They need to know how bills and regulations are going to affect our members and why bills that seem administrative or like paperwork bills can end up raising rents. Policymakers really need to hear from the industry." An hour and a half "Issues Briefing" prepared members to discuss NAA/NMHC's Successful Communities campaign, terrorism insurance Terrorism insurance is insurance purchased by property owners to cover their potential losses and liabilities that might occur due to terrorist activities. Attendees said that the briefings helped them structure their meetings and make the most of "face time" with legislators and staff. A Day on Capitol Hill NAA members from 22 state apartment delegations conducted 181 Hill visits that were coordinated through NAA. The visits were exciting and successful, as many attendees reported gaining the support of their lawmakers in key areas. Marc Rosenwasser, Meadow meadow grassland, used for grazing and/or haying. meadow buttercup ranunculusacris. meadow crowfoot ranunculusacris. meadow rue see thalictrum. Wood Property Co. and President of the Bay Area Apartment Association, said the visits to Capitol Hill this year made a big difference. He said he was able to speak directly to Representative Jim Davis (R-FL) about the terrorism insurance bill. Rosenwasser and the Florida delegation were able to discuss their concerns about terrorism coverage and Davis offered his support to the industry. Rosenwasser also was able to speak with Kimberly Warden WARDEN. A guardian; a keeper. This is the name given to various officers: as, the warden of the prison; the wardens of the port of Philadelphia; church wardens. , Legislative Counsel to Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL), about an insurance survey the Bay Area Apartment Association conducted last year. Warden asked that a few additional items be added to the survey and requested a copy of the survey. Said Rosenwaser, "Leaving Tuesday night, I felt that our group had accomplished a lot. Ron Shelton, CAPS, NAA Region VI Vice President, AIMCO AIMCO Apartment Investment Management Company (Columbus, OH) , said, "One group can sway a legislator LEGISLATOR. One who makes laws. 2. We provide information and get the legislators to see issues in a different light." Capitol Hill visits also allow attendees to develop a foundation for future contact with their legislators. Williams said, "We were able to discuss current topics with Pete Sessions Peter Anderson "Pete" Sessions (born March 22, 1955) is a politician from the state of Texas. Alice Ehn, from the Washtenaw Area Apartment Association, said, "After discussing our Capitol Conference with various associations in my local area whose organizations do similar conferences, I have come to the conclusion that NAA and the NMHC do an excellent job of hosting this event in Washington," she said. "Not only do we get the opportunity to get caught up on all NAA activities--meeting for three days prior to the actual Hill day--but the briefings are critical for those of us that don't make a living in watching the rental industry's political issues on a national level." Next year's Capitol Conference is scheduled for March 1-4, 2003, at the Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City Pentagon City may refer to:

That was among the satisfying results discovered by the more than 360 National Apartment Association (NAA) members who registered for the 2002 Capitol Conference, held in March, outside Washington, D.C. The highlight of the three-day Capitol Conference was the trip to Capitol Hill, where members met face-to-face with their respective congressmen and discussed key issues affecting the multihousing industry. NAA members visited the offices of more than 180 legislators. Members of the Triangle Apartment Association (N.C.) delegation, like many in the property management industry, were interested in legislative activity involving mold.
