) -- the philanthropic organization of the Washington state wine industry -- celebrates its 15th annual event on Aug. 22 and 24 at Chateau Ste. Michelle The Chateau Ste. Michelle is a Washington winery in Woodinville, Washington. They are noted for their bestselling Riesling (as the largest single producer of Riesling in the world), but produce wines of many classic varietals and some experimental wines on a per-year basis. Ste.  in Woodinville, Wash.

The 2002 celebration, From the Vineyard to the Glass, honors the state's 300 wine grape growers for their contributions to the industry's success.

"The 2002 theme showcases Washington's wine industry throughout all aspects," said Linda Moran, director of the event. "From the growers to the winemakers to wine enthusiasts, this year's event is really about celebrating our industry's accomplishments and giving back to our community."

The 2002 auction theme comes on the heels of Washington state being named "Wine Region of the Year" by Wine Enthusiast Magazine Wine Enthusiast magazine is a magazine covering wine, food, spirits, travel and entertaining topics. It was founded in 1988 by Adam and Sybil Strum and reaches 686,000 (2006 Mendelsohn Affluent Survey) readers. . Washington is the first American First American may refer to:

 region to receive this honor and the AWW events showcase the industry's dedication to giving back to its community.

As the nation's fourth largest charity wine auction, the Auction of Washington Wines has raised more than $8.5 million over the years and supports two beneficiaries -- Children's Hospital A children's hospital is a hospital which offers its services exclusively to children. The number of children's hospitals proliferated in the 20th century, as pediatric medical and surgical specialties separated from internal medicine and adult surgical specialties.  and Regional Medical Center and the Washington Wine Education Consortium, a new benefactor added in 2001.

Since the Auction of Washington Wines began in 1988, the industry formed a partnership to support Children's Hospital's uncompensated care uncompensated care,
n health care services provided by a hospital, physician, dental professional, or other health care professional for which no charge is made and for which no payment is expected.
. The hospital maintains a tradition of volunteer service for free or part-pay assistance to those children whose families are unable to financially provide needed medical care. In 2001, more than 50,000 statewide patients were treated, an investment of nearly $30 million. The annual AWW is the single largest event supporting uncompensated care.

"Gifts like the one from the Washington wine industry provide us with the resources needed to fulfill our mission of treating all children," said Gary McGill, director of develop for Children's Hospital.

Washington Wine Education Consortium

The Washington Wine Education Consortium is the industry's newest beneficiary added in 2001. A portion of funds raised during the AWW goes directly toward creating a world-class viticulture and enology program in Washington state. The industry and state educational institutions -- Washington State University Washington State University, at Pullman; land-grant and state supported; chartered 1890, opened 1892 as an agriculture college. From 1905 to 1959 it was the State College of Washington. , Columbia Basin College Columbia Basin College is a two-year community college based in Pasco, Washington. It includes facilities in nearby Richland for medical education. Its mascot is the Hawk, and its teams play in the NWAACC. , Yakima Valley Community College and Walla Walla Walla Walla (wŏl`ə wŏl`ə), city (1990 pop. 26,478), seat of Walla Walla co., SE Wash., at the junction of the Walla Walla River and Mill Creek, near the Oregon line; inc. 1862.  Community College -- are committed to developing a program to continue research efforts and train the industry at home.

Two events -- PICNIC and the Gala -- make up the weekend celebration featuring more than 100 Washington wineries, the state's celebrity chefs, and more than 1,600 auction goers.

PICNIC

PICNIC kicks off the 2002 Auction of Washington Wines on Thursday, Aug. 22 at 5 p.m. at Chateau Ste. Michelle on the concert lawn. The event is a casual, relaxed celebration featuring Washington wines and a gourmet picnic prepared by Chef Vicky McCaffree of Yarrow yarrow, a plant of the genus Achillea, perennial herbs of the family Asteraceae (aster family), native to north temperate regions. Several species are cultivated as ornamentals for their flat-topped clusters of flowers and scented foliage.  Bay Grill. Tickets are included in the price of the Gala event, but may be purchased separately for $125 per person.

The black tie gala event on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 4:30 p.m. features the Auction of Washington Wines Grand Live Auction under the 20,000 square foot tent and a five course meal prepared by Seattle's premier culinary experts -- John Sarich, executive chef at Chateau Ste. Michelle, Charles Ramseyer, executive chef at Ray's Boathouse; Jan Birnbaum and Jason McClure, executive chefs at Sazerac; Gavin Stephenson, executive chef at Four Season's Olympic Georgian Room; and Sue McCown, executive pastry chef at Earth & Ocean at the W Hotel. Auctioneers Dick and Sharon Friel once again conduct the bidding as the first course is served. No fewer than 4,000 plates, 3,000 wine glasses and 700 full stomachs later entertainment by Captain Smarty An earlier device marketed by Fischer International Systems Corporation, Naples, FL (www.fisc.com) that used a standard 3.5" floppy drive to read smart cards. The smart card was inserted into Smarty, which resembled a floppy disk.  Pants of the Seattle Men's Chorus Seattle Men's Chorus founded in 1979 in Seattle, Washington, bills itself as the largest community chorus in America, and the largest gay men's chorus in the world. It is a member of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA Choruses).  concludes the evening.
