2000 X Games, ESPN 'Xperiment' a Success With Chyron; All-Chyron Graphics Suite Sets Precedent.

Chyron Graphics, a subsidiary of Chyron Corporation (NYSE:CHY), a leading provider of broadcast hardware, software and services spanning television and the Internet, was a key technology partner to ESPN in the broadcast of last month's 2000 X Games.

Chyron used the specifications dictated for ESPN's on-air graphics suite to their own advantage by constructing a precedent-setting platform, unifying as many hardware and software components as possible. The result was a powerful and fully integrated, gigabit networked graphics suite.

"The overall hardware philosophy in the X Games Graphics Suite was integration and redundancy in a somewhat friendly, non-proprietary environment -- in this case, Windows NT(R)," says Joe Flynn, Broadcast Graphics Technical Consultant to the X Games. "The object was to bring not only interoperability between software and hardware, but cross-platform communication through high-speed translation and/or transfer of images. What this allowed us to do was, in essence, share hardware and graphic resources. All workstations could talk to each other, and in seconds we could replace one system with a backup without relocating the workstation."

We ended up going with some serious hardware, and some very powerful software: The graphics suite was comprised of six full-blown Chyron SD Duets(R), three decked out Chyron iNFiNiT!s(R) with SCSI Express and Clyps, a Chyron Aprisa(R) 250 and an Aprisa(R) 300. We output a total of twelve serial digital graphics sources, each consisting of both key and fill. Each of our highly specialized Duets, were equipped with leading edge third party peripherals and internal add-in devices selected for appropriateness to the task."

Lyric(R), Chyron's highly advanced creation and playback graphics package, and Liberty(R), Chyron's paint and animation design software both played major roles in bringing to air the cutting-edge graphics that have become synonymous with the X Games.

After two weeks of hard-core output for ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC, the total Chyron platform was a clear success, operating virtually error-free and establishing a solid blueprint for future X Games on-air graphics suite configurations. "To my knowledge, a suite of this scope and diversity has never before been assembled and successfully implemented, at least not at this level, for a live/live-to-tape broadcast," Joe Flynn concludes.
